Nyack’s hosts it’s annual Halloween parade on Saturday 10/31/09. Contributor Melanie Rock tells us how her family gets psyched for the big event and why Nyack is such a big draw. We’ve also included links to pictures and videos from Halloweens’ past to let newbies know what to expect. FYI, The Rockland Express says there will be a surprise celebrity guest judging the Best Float.

The 2009 Nyack Halloween Parade falls on what my four-year-old calls “Real Halloween.” Our whole family is thrilled and excited. We make a habit of wearing a family costume, which often suffers the spoils of multiple parties, meals, etc. This year, the laundress/seamstress in me is grateful that we can dress up just the one time.

Nyack is a happening Halloween place drawing people from all over because we townsfolk have such great spirit. We are a creative community. And we know how to come together, in celebration. The parade is family-friendly, with practically the whole town tying into the program. Nyack Center, Grace Church, and the local fire companies keep the festivities going with after-parade attractions, while the restaurants keep everyone lubed and fed. Sadly, the loss of programming at Riverspace means no ‘€œRocky Horror Picture Show’€ screening this year. But let us not lose touch with the swell of community collaboration that Riverspace enabled.

The Halloween Parade in Nyack is a fabulous venue for showcasing the symbiotic strengths of our little town. The parade reflects the passions of our people. It’s a crazy, mixed up marvel. The subliminal beauty that drew us here is in plain view when we come together.
