Do Flash Mobs Happen in the Rain?

by Kristina Burns

It’s a big HopperHappens weekend — but the weather outside is cloudy. Which begs a few questions.

Q: Do Flash Mobs happen in the rain?

A: Apparently they do- especially when they are part of an Art Walk.

The latest Nyack forecast calls for a Sunny Saturday — perfect weather to head down to the Hopper House to hear short stories at 4:30p read by two Nyack residents, actress Sakina Jaffrey and author David Means.

Or come down to Main Street at 9:30p to see pop-up projections of Hopper paintings and the local art he inspired.

Q: Did Edward Hopper ever paint a rainy day?

Not that I know of!

According to Gail Levin, author of “Edward Hopper: Intimate Biography,” on rainy days when the light was too poor to paint, the Hoppers went to movies —  especially French ones.

Q: How will a Hopper Flash Mob remind people of the master of light and shadows when it’s overcast and raining?

Good question. For me, Hopper is all about state of mind.

His work captured moments that we all pass through every day:
you know-
when you linger in between home and wherever you’re expected….but you’re not quite sure why
when you hesitate near a patch of sunshine or long shadow… just because
when you feel like you’re waiting for someone or something…even when you’re not
when you’re just about to leave or you’ve just then arrived and you wonder…what’s next?

You can recognize yourself, your life, your day in his paintings-
maybe especially when it’s raining…

Kris Burns is producing HopperHappens, a series of live art moments in Nyack that complement the Year Of Edward Hopper exhibits at the Hopper House Art Center. She is an artist in residence at the Hopper House.

Nyack People & Places, a weekly series that features photos and profiles of citizens and scenes near Nyack, NY, is sponsored by Sun River Health.
