Annual African American Parade in Nyack on Sat

Nyack African American Parade, May 2011There’s a parade to the park on Saturday at 2p. Nyack celebrates its sixth annual African American Day on Saturday, May 3 with a parade and a multicultural festival in Memorial Park.

The parade route starts at the Franklin St at Cedar Hill Ave and and proceeds north, turning right on Main Street, then right on Broadway, down Depew Ave. into Nyack’s Memorial Park on the Hudson River.

Marchers include The Baltimore Twilighters Marching Band, the Nyack High School Marching Band, the East Ramapo Marching Band and Motherland Rhythms & Dance. The parade also features the Nyack Fire Department, the Nyack and Spring Valley Branches of the NAACP, The Nyack Center, the Westchester/Rockland Guardians Association, Rockland Lodge 424, Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club of West Point and the Mount Vernon Classic Car Club.

The 2014 parade will celebrate the achievements of Grand Marshall Cora Sarjeant Wilder, a native of Columbia, SC and long-time resident of the South Nyack. Wilder is a published author, Fulbright Scholar, Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching nominee and lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and NAACP. Nyack. She also has the distinction of being elected delegate for three presidential candidates – George McGovern, Jesse Jackson, and Bill Clinton.

Parking will not be permitted along the parade route and in Memorial Park between 12n and 4p.

The day’s event’s include a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Memorial Park beginning at 9a. The championship game will be played at the conclusion of the parade.

There’s more than just music, sports and dance after the march down Main and Broadway: there are jobs, too. Tomorrow’s Workplace will hold a mini ‘Job Fair’ at Memorial Park as part of the post parade festivities. Visitors are encouraged to drop by their booth, fill out a job application or drop off a resume. The post-parade festival in the park includes music, crafts, food & fun hosted by local vendors as well as community service organizations
