Nyack Weekender: Halloween Weekend Hauntings for Oct 31-Nov 2

Here’s a run down of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • Hi Tor Animal Shelter presents Clown Asylum Haunted House at MacGuffie Manor! Guests best beware of ghosts, zombies, and other thrills as they wander through the haunted mansion of the late Dr. Martha MacGuffie. If spooky surprises aren’t for you, check out the outdoor tent for kid-friendly activities and the kittens up for adoption! Admission is $8 adults; $5 kids 13 & under; $for students with ID. All proceeds will benefit the animal medical fund. Continues on Sat, Nov. 1. Both days 6p-10p. 591 S. Mountain Rd., New City.
  • Trick-or-Treat at Provident Bank Park. The Rockland Boulders invite families with children under 12 to the BoulderBird’s 2nd Annual “Trick-or-Treat” this Halloween! Don’t miss all the frightful festivities – a live DJ, haunted train rides, a costume contest, and a bounty of games and candy! Free admission. 5:30p – 8p. Provident Bank Park, 1 Provident Bank Park Drive, Pomona.

Saturday

  • The annual Rockland Youth Film Festival gives young filmmakers from Rockland County and beyond a chance to showcase their talents and creativity. Free admission but seating is limited.   • Stop by the Nature Place Day Camp for their Apple Cider Pressing.  Families help to grind apples, press them into fresh cider, and taste the fruit of their labor. Johnny Appleseed will make an appearance, followed by an autumn open house for the Nature Place. Cider pressing from 12n-1p, open house from 1-4p. The Nature Place Day Camp, 307 Hungry Hollow Road, Chestnut Ridge.
  • The Nyack Saturday Farmer’s Market features local farmers, florists, food and craft artisans. Ed Packer entertains with a variety of Blues, Country, Cowboy, Rock (old and new) and more, from 10a-12n. The market runs from 8a-1p, Main Street parking lot.

Sunday

  • Fall back and sleep in: Sunday is the end of Daylight Savings Time.
  • Berta and Elmer Hader:  A Lifetime of Art,  an exhibit from The Historical Society of the Nyacks featuring the work of Grandview authors and illustrators of childrens’ books. On display through November at the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Family Magic Show with magician and street performer Mark Calabrese. Critically acclaimed in the magic world, Mark is celebrated for his “digital dexterity” and comedic persona. He’s worked with stars like Jack Nicholson, Eddie Izzard, Rosie O’Donnell and more! Tickets are $14 and the show is suitable for all ages. 2p (doors open at 1p). Levity Live Comedy Club, Palisades Center Drive, West Nyack.
  • Holiday Boutique at the Piermont Train Station. A great opportunity to purchase unique and local gifts for this holiday season. Items include train station posters, Piermont photobooks, Piermont ornaments, Piermont holiday cards and historical Piermont photos. The boutique will also feature the work of local artists Bill Batson, John Rossi, Sally Savage and Betsy Franco Feeney. 12-5p. Piermont Train Station, 50 Ash Street, Piermont.

  • WedRivertown Film presents The New Black – A profile of an African-American community grappling with gay rights and gay marriage in the context of civil rights.  A post-screening discussion includes Willie Trotman, President of Spring Valley NAACP, Rev. Owen C. Thompson of Grace Church in Nyack, and Vanessa Green, VCS Racial Justice Organizer; moderated by Phyllis B. Frank, Associate Executive Director, VCS. 8p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Thurs: JCC Rockland hosts the Holocaust Heroism Film Event which features a screening of “50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus.” This documentary follows a couple who leave their home and children behind to rescue 50 children in Nazi Germany. Followed by a desert reception. Tickets: $15 by October 31, $20 after $36 (reserved seating) by October 31 $50 (reserved seating) by October 31.
