Nyack Weekender for Nov 14-16

Here’s a run down of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • Come to an old-fashioned Family Barn Dance from 7-9:30p complete with contra dancing and live fiddle music by husband and wife duo, The Poor Cousin. Stick around for the silent auction to benefit the Blue Rock School.  Congers Lake Memorial Park, Auditorium, 6 Gilchrest Road, Congers. 
  • The Carnegie Concert Jazz Series presents blues guitarist and vocalist Sa Ron Crenshaw,  who travels the country playing jazz, rhythm and blues. Crenshaw recently opened for Robert Cray and BB King. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Rockland Jazz & Blues Society7:30-9:30p, Nyack Library, 59 South Broadway.
  • The Michael Purcell Trio performs at the Upstairs Lounge at Prohibition River. 10p-1a. No cover, 82 Main St, Nyack.
  • Elmwood Playhouse stages Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim. Fri & Sat at 8p, 10 Park St.
  • Children’s Shakespeare Theatre presents its final weekend of All’s Well That Ends Well. Enjoy the laughs as the company kicks off their 16th season with this delightful and entertaining play. 7 – 9:30p Fri & Sat. at the Palisades Presbyterian Church, 117 Washington Spring Rd, Palisades.
  • Frances Wells, an artist whose paintings which captivate the natural beauty of the Hudson River, is the Artist of the Month at The Corner Frame Shop. There’s an artist’s reception on 11/14 from 6-8p; the exhibit runs through November. 40 South Franklin & Depew.

Saturday

  • The Historical Society of Rockland County invites you to daytrip through History in Your Own Backyard. The 11/15 bus trip includes including a tour of the theatre organ of the Lafayette Theater and the pipe organ of Cadet Chapel at West Point. Cost: $69 per person (HSRC Members); $74 (Non-members). Includes bus transportation, guided tour and lunch. The tour leaves Suffern Commuter Parking Lot at 8:45a and concludes after lunch at Marcello’s Ristorante. 
  • Suzanne Foley talks about the groundbreaking Please Pick Project at the Nyack Saturday Farmer’s Market. Please Pick is a neighborhood initiative to help communities grow food for neighbors in need.  The Sat edition of the Nyack Farmer’s Market is open from 8a-1p in the Main Street parking lot.
  • Blue Rock School invites you to their Fall Information Session & Campus Tour. 10a-3p. 110 Demarest Mill Rd, West Nyack.
  • Join Mario the Magician for an uplifting, inventive, and highly interactive magical performance for the young and young-at-heart to benefit the Nursery School of the Nyacks. 11a-12:30p. Memorial Hall at Grace Church, 130 First Avenue.

Sunday

  • The African American Historical Society of Rockland County holds a reception for their 2015 calendar featuring work by Nyack Sketch Log artist Bill Batson. 5-7p, Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 North Broadway.
  • GraceMusic presents Home: A Musical Journey Through the Landscapes of Life. The Grace Church Choir sings choral pieces by American composers Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Randall Thompson, Morten Lauridsen, Stephen Paulus,  and many more under the direction of Brandon Beachamp. Admission $20; Seniors $15; Children under 12 are free. Admission includes a “Meet-the-Artists” reception following concert. 4p. Grace Church 130 First Ave, Nyack.
  • If storytelling is your thing, check out the 19th annual Rockland County Storytelling Festival on Sun from 1:30-4:30p at the Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library in Garnerville.
  • A Taste of the Lower Valley hosted by The OUTSIDE IN gallery to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A showcase of local dishes from establishments in Piermont, Sparkill, Tappan, Orangeburg, North Bergen & NYC. Examples of simple, wholesome, quality food choices are intended to help raise awareness of Type 1 Diabetes. The event will include a BLUE Exhibit of functional pottery and fine art that will be sold to benefit the cause. 10a-3p, The OUTSIDE IN, 249 Ferdon Avenue, Piermont
  • Union Arts presents a Sophomore CD Funding Concert for vocalist, Shirley Crabbe with Donald Vega – piano, Paul Beaudry – bass and Alvester Garnett – drums, 3p (doors open at 2:15). General Admission $40 & $75; VIP seats $125 & $250. Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art, an exhibit from The Historical Society of the Nyacks featuring the work of Grandview authors and illustrators of childrens’ books. On display through November at the Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.

Next Week

Tues: “Food for Thought Series” Oil & Water: Privatization & Public Schools.  A thought provoking discussion about the role of private corporations and their philanthropic foundations in the public school system. Wed: The next installment of the 2014 John Scott Armchair walking tours features The Return of the Eagles to Rockland County – A Photographic Journey presented by Ray Wright, a noted wildlife photographer and former Nyack realtor. 7p, The Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway

WedRivertown Film presents Alive Inside – A film that reveals how music brings the visceral joy back to the lives of Alzheimer’s patients. A post-film discussion will be moderated by music therapist, Jeffrey Friedberg MT-BC, LCAT; Barbara Bedway, who appears in the film; Sara Weale, MPH, Social Work Intern at Family Services of Westchester; and MargaretC.
