C Nyack This Weekend: Caroling, Chocolates, Cider, Concerts

Here’s your Nyack Weekender run down of what to do and where to do it.

Friday

  • The Nyack Art Collective greets the season with a flurry of First Friday activities that will make everyone merry and bright:

Hopper Holiday Celebration. Hopper-original holiday cards, unique gifts, and affordable art for sale. Opening reception for Artist of the Month: Rae Court. From 6:30-8p, enjoy a free GOLDEN acrylics lecture/demo. Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, from 5-8p.

Opening reception for A Narrative Impulse: The Bookworks and Interpretive Paintings of Beata Wehr6-8p at Amis Gallery, 79 1/2 S Broadway.

After Party with Walk to the Beat. 9p-1a at Casa Del Sol, 104 Main St.

  • Bill Batson, author of the weekly Nyack Sketch Log on Nyack News and View, has published the Nyack Sketch Log book. He’ll be signing books from 5:30-6:30p at Pickwick Book Shop, 8 S Broadway.
  • There will be a Community Candlelight Vigil at The Nyack Center to remember Eric Garner from Staten Island and Michael Brown from Ferguson, MO. 7p, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Ryan & Ryan folk duo performs rock and blues at Prohibition River. No cover. 9p, 82 Main St, Nyack.

Saturday

  • Carnegie Concerts presents Rachmaninoff Chamber Music. Violinist David Lisker, cellist Ben Capps, and pianist Vassily Primakov perform Rachmaninoff’s two “Elegiac” Piano Trios. 7:30p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
  • Toys of the Past: Childhood Memories Before 1955 – The exhibit includes dolls, doll houses, stuffed animals, children’s books, games and toy soldiers. On Saturdays through February. From 1-4p at the Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum, 50 Piermont Ave, behind Nyack Library and across from Memorial Park.
  • St. Nicholas Day Celebration, a Historical Society tradition since 1961. Children of all ages can visit with St. Nicholas and his horse. Gifts for kids and holiday refreshments. Make reservations at RocklandHisory.org. Sat, Sun at 10:30a, 12p, 1:30p, and 3p. The Historical Society of Rockland County, 20 Zukor Road, New City.
  • The Chazen Jazz Concert series features Grammy-winner Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks with guest vocalist Catherine Russell at Rockland Community College Cultural Arts Center at 8p. For more info or tickets visit JCCRockland.org.

Sunday

  • Holiday Lights of Nyack –  Celebrate the season with three C’s that bring holiday cheer: caroling, cocoa and cider. There will also be holiday stories and a visit by Santa. 4-6p at Veterans Park Gazebo, Main Street. (This event had been previously scheduled for Sat but it’s been moved to Sun due to the weather forecast).
  • Music & Readings in the Holiday Spirit – Beth Fowler (who plays Sister Ingalls on “Orange is the New Black), Alli Mauzey (from Hairspray and Wicked) join WQXR’s Elliot Forrest and Broadway’s Kevin Pariseau for an evening of special holiday readings to benefit The Nyack Center. Purchase tickets at NyackCenter.org. 7p, 58 Depew Ave.
  • The Annual GraceMusic Messiah Sing –Messiah PR Graphic “We provide the soloists, you sing the choruses.” Listeners welcome, reception to follow. 4p, Grace Episcopal Church, 130 First Ave.
  • Join the fun at Piermont’s Holiday Festival with tree lighting, Santa, ice sculptures, music, and refreshments. 5-6p at Flywheel Park, Piermont.
  • Annual Gift of Art Show and Sale features works by local artists and provides a wonderful opportunity to purchase unique holiday gifts. The theme is “Postcards from Piermont. 3-5p, Dennis P. McHugh Piermont Public Library, 25 Flywheel Park West, Piermont.

Tues

  • ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ at the Tuesdays at Two weekly film series in the Nyack Library. This months theme is ‘Movies in a Celebrating Mood.’ 2p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
  • Nyack Chamber Holiday Party. Celebrate a year of great events and community fun! All chamber members and non-members welcome to come and meet the Nyack Chamber board members and other business owners. Enjoy craft food and drinks, as well as door prizes. Prohibition River, 82 Main St.

Historical Society Of The NyacksArmchair Walking Tour: When Nyack Meant Business. Through old photographs, reflect on Nyack’s commercial past and hear the stories of many of Main Street’s early businesses and entrepreneurs. 7-8:30p, Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.

Thurs

The Nyack Indoor Farmers’ Market moves indoors to the Nyack Center. Through March 26, excluding Dec 25 & Jan 1. 8a – 2p, 58 Depew Ave.
