Prius owners, wipe that smug look off your face, because you aren’t the greenest thing on the block anymore. Unless, of course, you own a plug in Prius.

The Westport Electric Car Club (WECC) invites all EV (electric vehicle) drivers to their third annual Electric Car Rally, a 40-mile event on Sunday, May 3. Any plug-in vehicle is permitted to enter whether it is a plug-in hybrid or fully electric. Past participating EV’s included the Tesla Model S, Tesla Roadster, Chevrolet Volt, Nissan Leaf, BMW ActiveE, BMW i3, Smart EV, Ford C-Max Energi, Toyota Prius Plug-in, Honda Fit, and Fisker Karma.

The two hour rally course will cover a 40-mile route winding through the back roads of Fairfield County, CT.  Although there will be electricity in the air prior to it start, event officials say this is a rally and not a race. The winner will be the car that comes in as close as possible to the official mileage as determined by the rally master without exceeding it. Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up.

Although Nyack probably has one of the highest per-capita Prius counts in the country, Westport takes the commitment to go green to a whole new level. “The town and the EV club enjoy a productive partnership as we continue to expand the number of public charging stations locally,” says Steve Smith from the Westport Building Dept. Smith says the town now has eight free public charging stations, most of which are solar-powered.

The rally will begin at 1p at the Saugatuck Metro North Station in Westport. Driver check-in takes place at 12n in front of the Steam Coffee Bar on the New Haven bound side of the station. There is a $50 entry fee per vehicle and all drivers are required to have a navigator. The club will help find a navigator for any driver who needs one.

The EV Road Rally is being held in conjunction with the annual Wilton Go Green Festival. Attendees can learn about EVs, speak to the drivers and enjoy the exhibits and food. The Go Green Festival takes place at the Wilton Library and the town green. “The Wilton Go Green Festival is delighted to host the finish line for the Westport Electric Car Club EV Rally at our fifth annual festival,” says Jana Bertkau,  Chairman of the 2015 Wilton Go Green Festival Chairman. “The rally is wonderful testimony to the rising interest in sustainable transportation in our area.”
