Nyack Weekender: All That Jazz, Hiking, Biking — Plus Poetry and Brass Bands, Too

There’s jazz on Friday and big brass bands to hear on Sunday and Monday. Not to mention a spring hike, a bike meetup, poetry, theatre and Rachmaninoff, too. Here’s the rundown of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • The Rockland County Jazz Blues Society presents the Carnegie Concert Jazz Series with legendary pianist, innovator, George Cables and his trio featuring Essiet Essiet, bass, and Victor Lewis, drums. Purchase tickets prior to show. 8p at Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Nyack College Opera Workshop presents Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi by Puccini, fully staged in costume. Fri. at 8p, Sun. at 3p at Nyack College 45 S. Blvd.
  • Attend a Spring Swing Gala benefit featuring a production of The 1940’s Radio Hour. Fri. at 7p, Sat. at 2p & 6:30p, Sun. at 2p at Rockland Country Day School, 34 Kings Highway, Congers.
  • Join Sharada Devi and band for an evening of Kirtan, the ancient form of meditative, call and response chanting done in India. 8-10p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St., Sparkill.
  • Attend an Evening of Poetry in celebration of National Poetry Month. 6:30p at Piermont Public Library, 25 Flywheel Park W., Piermont.

Saturday

  • The Bike Nyack Meetup group will ride from Nyack to Englewood, NJ at 9a. Meetup location is the upper level of Memorial Park on South Broadway. Visit Meetup.com for details and to join this free group to learn about future events.
  • Healthy Kids Day is a free community event at the Rockland County YMCA featuring a family fun walk, bouncy castles, kids Zumba & yoga, a giant game of Simon Sez, the Rockland Boulders & Boulder Bird, arts & crafts, a book give away and info sessions for parents and kids. 11a – 4p, 35 S. Broadway, Nyack.
  • Performing Arts and Campus Players present Rent! 8-10p at Rockland Community College, 145 College Road, Suffern.
  • Take part in a fun, family concert with Kurt Gallagher. For children ages 2-8 with caregiver. 11a – 12p at Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Carnegie Concert Series: Rachmaninoff – The Early Years. Pianist Alexandre Moutouzkine performs. 7:30–9:30p at Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison and entrepreneur, and Underground Railroad conductor Cynthia Hesdra are featured in an exhibition, 1-4p, every Sat through May. Historical Society of the Nyacks, 50 Piermont Ave.

Sunday

  • The NJ Palisades Interstate Parks Commission will lead a guided Spring Nature Hike at 10a from PIPC Park Headquarters in Alpine, NJ. This four mile, three hour hike is rated easy. For more information call 201-615-9226.
  • Made @ RoCA! Annual Student Exhibition Opening and Camp Open House. View a year’s worth of art by RoCA’s talented students. 2-5p at Rockland Center For the Arts, 27 S. Greenbush Rd., W. Nyack.
  • 30 brass players come to Grace Church! Imperial Brass returns to play a mix of popular & classical pieces. Admission ($20; seniors $15; children under 12 free) includes meet-the-artists reception. 4p at Grace Church, 130 First Ave.
  • Participate in a Feldenkrais Method Breathing Workshop. This practice helps individuals correct the way they breath to improve overall health, sleeping, anxiety, and more. Walk-ins $30. 3-5p at American Legion Hall, 85 Piermont Ave, Nyack.

Monday

The United States Air Force Heritage Band performs a concert to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Town of Stony Point. Reservations required. 7p at North Rockland High School, 106 Hammond Rd, Thiells. Presented by the Arts Council of Rockland.

Tuesday

Enjoy a free screening of Symphony of the Soil, presented by Rockland Farm Alliance. The acclaimed documentary has revolutionized the way that people understand the ground beneath their feet. 7 – 10p at The Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
