Learn how to create a graphic novel at the Nyack Library’s four week program beginning on Wed July 8.
Although similar to comic books because they use sequential art to tell a story, graphic novels aren’t a genre — they are a format which differs from traditional comic books because they are usually stand-alone stories with more complex plots which can be works of fiction, non-fiction, history or fantasy…or another genre.
The term graphic novel was first used in 1964, but became commonly used after the publication of A Contract with God in 1978. The general public became familiar with the term in the late 1980s after the successes of Spiegelman’s Maus, Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and Moore and Gibbons’ Watchmen. While the graphic novel is very popular among younger audiences, it doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy them. Some classics such as Don Quixote and Moby Dick have been recreated in this format.

If you have ever wanted to learn how to create your own graphic novel, local graphic novelist BattleMasterz will show you how over the course of a 4 week program beginning July 8 at 5pm at the Nyack Library. You will learn story boarding, inking, coloring and format! Each week will focus on the next step to constructing your very own page turner. For the past few years BattleMasterz has had a table at New York Comic Con selling their own series of graphic novels. Registration is required.
