Nyack Weekender: The 4th & First Friday. It’s Boom! Bike, Hike

Nyack’s July 4th Fireworks lights up the night just before 9p on Sat. It’s also First Friday for art, music and activities in the village. And there’s some local Independence Day history inside and outside you don’t want to miss. Here’s your rundown of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • The Nyack Art Collective holds its monthly arts festival featuring exhibits by member artists in businesses throughout downtown and a group show titled Landscapes: Real or Imagined at Prohibition River, 82 Main St. Also featuring performances by Walk to the Beat and For Vibrations from 5:30-8:00p at the Main Street gazebo.
  • Kick off 4th of July weekend as the Rockland Boulders take on the Garden State Grays. Enjoy live music by Kickstart Charlie starting at 7:30p at Provident Bank Park, 1 Provident Bank Park Drive, Pomona.
  • The Palisades Fair returns to West Nyack with family-friendly offerings like the Fearless Flores Circus, illusionist Lance Gifford, a Las Vegas hypnotist, a petting zoo, rides, games, fair food and more. Fri (5p-close), Sat & Sun (1p-close) at Palisades Center Mall, 1000 Palisades Center Dr, West Nyack.

Saturday

  • Join your neighbors for fun and good exercise at the weekly BikeNyack.com community ride from Memorial Park. This week’s bicycle route is to Oradell, NJ. Meet up at 8:30a, Piermont & Depew Aves, Nyack.
  • ar_FireworksFort Lee, NJ made its mark on American history during the 1776 British campaign to control New York City and the Hudson River. There will be a cannon firing in honor of Independence Day at Fort Lee Historic Park. Demonstrations will be held at the soldiers’ encampment on the hour between 2 and 4p.
  • Did you know that July 4th is the 165th birthday of Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site? There will be a brief talk and special tours where you can use stereographic photos to experience the Hasbrouck House as it would have been in the late 1800s.   • Nyack’s July 4th Fireworks on the Hudson River begin around 9p. That’s also roughly the same time that the Village of Sleepy Hollow on the East Bank of the Hudson starts their show. It’s two for the price of one, except that both are free. Near Memorial Park, Piermont Ave & Depew Aves, Nyack.

Sunday

  • There will be the sound of musket fire and cries of Huzzah! when the Declaration of Independence is read aloud at the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site by a soldier of General Washington’s army. Be on hand to support the patriots and decry the actions of King George at 2:45p,

Tuesday

  • Rockland Summer Sings is an evening of sight singing or listening of Carmina Burana, conducted by Vincent Green (Director, Rockland County Catholic Choir) and accompanied by Michael Fenne. 7:30p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Friends of the Nyacks presents its Mostly Music Festival each Tuesday evening this summer. This week enjoy music by John Malino Family Band. 7:30p at Memorial Park, Piermont Ave, Nyack.

Wednesday

Rivertown Film presents Girlhood, a film about Marieme, a teenage girl of African descent whose life changes when she meets lady, the leader of a girl gang. 8-10p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.

Thursday

  • CheckerCab201207It’s Classic Car Night in Nyack when vintage vehicles will roll into the village from 4-8p. Come see the wide array of classics, antiques, specialty models and muscle cars take over Main Street. Sponsored by the Nyack Chamber.
  • The Arts Council of Rockland holds a workshop for artists seeking 2016 grant at Finkelstein Memorial Library. Artists of all disciplines (Visual, Writers, Musicians, Filmmakers, Performing Artists) are invited to apply for grants from the Arts Council! Learn all about them at the grants information meetings: 6p, Finkelstein Memorial Library, 24 Chestnut Street, Spring Valley.
  • Music In The Garden returns to the Hopper House on July 9 with the Cameron Brown Quarter. Recommended donation of $5. BYOLc (where, “Lc” = lawn chair). 7:30p, 82 North Broadway, Nyack.
