Nyack Weekender: Bastille Day & Nyack Street Fair

There are concerts in the parks, theatre indoors, rowing at Rockland Lake and a little French Revolution in Piermont…not to mention a Nyack Street Fair on Sunday. Here’s your rundown of what to do and where to do it.

Friday

  • Penguin Rep Theatre stages My Name Is Asher Lev, adapted from the novel by Chaim Potok. Show runs through August 2 – check out showtimes here. Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Crickettown Rd, Stonypoint.
  • Attend the Town of Orangetown’s Summer Concert Series! This week, the James Dean Orchestra pays tribute to the music of Frank Sinatra. Concerts are free and open to the public. 7:45-10p at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Orangetown.

Saturday

  • River Rowing Association hosts Bring A Friend To Rowing Day. Potential recruits can attend free of charge and will learn how to row on land using a rowing machine before going out on the water in a racing shell. Pre-registration and waiver required. 9-11:30am at Rockland Lake State Park, lot #6.
  • Take part in the French festivities at the Bastille Day Celebration. Witness a re-enactment of the storming of the Bastille, glass blowers and sketch artists. Dress in period clothes – 18th century – for the costume contest and the Bastille Day march. French food and live music throughout the day: 12p – Adele LaTourette 1:15p – Paradise Blues Band 2:15p – Alex Stokes 3:15p – The Bobby DiBlasio Band 4:15p – Unborn Mind (Ray Labella) 5:15p – Grilled Cheese (Joe Conti) 6:15p – Doc Lane & Loose Change 7:15pm – Billypalooza.
  • The Haverstraw RiverArts & Music Festival features music and art set against the backdrop of the Hudson River. The river-centric festival hosts a sculpture event where professional artists use stone, clay and brick to create works of art. Live music throughout the day. Children enjoy Nyack’s Mario the Magician, face painting and a Community Tile Craft Project. Craft vendors, food trucks, & micro brews. 12-6p at Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.
  • The League Residency at Vyt presents their first summer exhibition featuring over 30 diverse works from artists living in the lower Hudson Valley. 2-5p in the Elizabeth V. Sullivan Gallery, 241 Kings Highway, Orangeburg.

Sundaystreet

  • Nyack’s Famous Street Fair features 300 booths of arts & crafts, retail & commercial exhibitors, festival foods and music lining downtown Nyack. Outdoor cafes, pubs and boutiques means there’s fun for everyone except Fido: no dogs allowed. Sponsored by the Arts, Crafts and Antiques Dealers Association (ACADA)  10a-5p.
  • Reception for artist Susan Strange’s exhibit, Strange Life Through Collage. On display through July. Noon-2p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.

Next Week

Monday

No community college has ever hosted a Presidential Debate before…but SUNY RCC is trying to make history as one of the selected sites for the 2016 Presidential Debates. The public is invited to a kickoff-brainstorming-planning-party to put Rockland County on the map for this high profile national political event. 5-7p, Rockland Community College Cultural Arts Center, 145 College Road in Suffern.

Tuesday

Friends of the Nyacks presents its Mostly Music Festival each Tuesday evening this summer. This week enjoy music by John Whoever and Who Are They, featuring singer-songwriter John VandenOever and Frankie D and the Boys. 7:30p at Memorial Park, Piermont Ave, Nyack.

Thursday

  • CheckerCab201207Rescheduled from last week because of inclement weather, Classic Car Night in Nyack finally arrives as vintage vehicles roll into the village from 4-8p. Come see the wide array of classics, antiques, specialty models and muscle cars take over Main Street. Sponsored by the Nyack Chamber.
  • Come to the Bear Mountain Concert Series to hear Jason Green & the Labor of Love Band, NY-based trio whose diverse style includes jazz, blues, western swing, latin, and bluegrass. 7-10p at Bear Mountain, 3006 Seven Lakes Drive, Bear Mountain.
  • Music In The Garden brings Richie Hart’s 33 1/3 to the Hopper House. Recommended donation of $5. Bring a lawn chair. 7:30p, 82 North Broadway, Nyack.
