Nyack Weekender: The Play’s The Thing

Four plays, two art exhibitions, country & classical music, walking, cycling and rowing. There’s lots from which to choose during this first weekend of autumn.

Friday

  • CubaCuba Antes: Images of Cuba on the Cusp of Change features  photography by Julie Cahn. Closing reception from 6-9p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.
  • Harlots and Heresy, an original play by Isabel Merians, about mysteries from the time when the Great Goddess was considered the creator of the universe. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 3p, at Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St.
  • Check out Broadway Bound by Neil Simon, an emotionally charged comedy setup with plenty of nostalgic punch. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, at Elmwood Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • The classic farce comedy, Boeing Boeing, is on stage at Antrim Playhouse. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, 15 Spook Rock Road, Suffern.

Saturday

  • It’s the last Bring A Friend & Learn To Row Day of the season on Rockland Lake with the River Rowing Association. Try this fun activity for free and learn how to row on land using a rowing machine before going out on the water in a racing shell. Pre-registration and waiver required. 8-11a at Rockland Lake State Park, Lot #6.
  • ad_BikeNyack255x219Join Bike Nyack for this week’s “Tour de Orangetown led by guest ride leader Orangetown Supervisor Andy Stewart. The 17 mile loop starts at Memorial Park in Nyack. Meet up at 8:30a, Piermont & Depew Aves.
  • Penguin Rep Theatre presents Jake Ehrenreich‘s comedy musical, A Jew Grows in Brooklyn for one performance only. 8p at SUNY Rockland Community College, 145 College Road, Suffern. 
  • This weekend is your last chance to experience the 16th century at the New York Renaissance Faire. Costumed characters, dancers, strolling minstrels, storytellers and magicians amuse you while you visit the marketplace of period crafts. Faire runs Sat & Sun 10a-7p through at Sterling Forest at Tuxedo Park, 600 Route 17A.
  • Dance the night away at Saturday Night Salsa in the West Gate Lounge. Dance lessons at 8p, and the band starts at 11p. Best Western, 26 Route 59, Nyack.

Sunday

  • See the rich, diverse artistic culture of the lower Hudson Valley is on display at The League Residency at VytThe exhibit showcases 30 diverse works from artists living in and influenceh artisticture in the lower Hudson Valley. The exhibit is on display in the Elizabeth V. Sullivan Gallery and curated by Art Student’s League artist Naomi Campbell. 2-5p at Vyt, 241 Kings Highway, Orangeburg.
  • Accomplished musicians Matthew Harrison and Vlada Yaneva bring to you their passion and excitement for classical music! Their interactive show, Masterwork Conversations, an imaginative perspective of the works they play. 1:30p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303, Valley Cottage.
  • Hopper Hootenanny, the 3rd annual fundraising event for the Edward Hopper House Art Center with live music by the Old No. 7 Band. Dancing, bourbon bar, food/drinks, silent auction and more.  Advance tickets $45, at the door $50. 5-7p at The Hopper House, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack.
  • Historic Nyack Walking Tour: Trace Nyack’s growth from a small river village to a major commercial and manufacturing center. Learn about the same buildings that were present at the turn-of-the-century when Nyack was called the “Gem Of The Hudson.” Sponsored by Friends Of The Nyacks. Meet at the foot of Main Street by the river in Nyack at 2p.

Tuesday

  • In celebration of Banned Books Month, local celebrities, community members, Nyack Library Trustees and staff members will read excerpts from a banned or challenged book of their choice. The Top 25 “banned books” of all time include The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird and Charlotte’s Web. 5-6p, 59 S Broadway.
  • Water

    Attend a family-friendly fundraiser to benefit the Rockland Water Coalition. The Rockland’s Got Talent Revue includes a meet, greet and eat dinner at 6:30p, followed by the talent show at 7:30p.
