Nyack Weekender: Oct 2-4

Autumn is alive with the arts! There is Nyack’s First Friday, a showing of The Amazing Nina Simone documentary, theatre throughout the county, an historic look at rock n’ roll, and a celebration of The Purple Rose of Cairo.

  • It’s the First Friday of October and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival includes a group show titled Dreams & Dreamscapes at Prohibition River at 8p, 82 Main St. Live music and poetry by the Suffern Poets takes place from 6-8p at the Main Street gazebo. Percussive world music and dance takes place at Casa del Sol at 9p, 104 Main St. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p.
  • As part of First Friday, the Edward Hopper House Art Center hosts poets Maxine Silverman and Carole Stone in an all-Hopper poetry reading. 7p at The Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway.
  • The Manhattan Short Film Festival takes place across six continents in one week. This annual international film festival features 10 short films selected from 678 entries from 52 countries, and one venue is right here in Rockland County. All films are under 15 minutes. 7:30-9:30p at Palisades Community Center, 675 Oak Tree Rd, Palisades.
  • ninaRivertown Film presents The Amazing Nina Simone, a moving biographical, musical, and social history
    movie that remembers a unique musician. Jazz/Blues legend Sam Waymon, Nina’s brother, performs a musical tribute at 7:30. Post film discussion with director Jeff L. Lieberman and Sam Waymon. 7:30p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • From the author of last season’s hit Playing the Assassin comes his newest play, Priceless, about an art caper gone awry. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Penguin Repertory Theater 7 Crickettown Rd, Stony Point.
  • 3 actors reading their 3 new plays: The Gift of Maggie’s by Bette Siler, Like a Sack of Potatoes by Ric Siler, and Careful What You Wish For by Judy Stadt. Fri & Sat at 8p, Shades Repertory Theater Company, 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
  • Check out Broadway Bound by Neil Simon, an emotionally charged comedy setup with plenty of nostalgic punch. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, at Elmwood Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • The classic farce comedy, Boeing Boeing, is on stage at Antrim Playhouse. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, 15 Spook Rock Road, Suffern.

Saturday

  • Book Sale at the Nyack Library! Hardcovers $2 and up, DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks as marked. Proceeds benefit the Library. Sat from 10-4p, Sun from noon – 4p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
  • Acclaimed poets Alison Stone and Gerald McCarthy and award-winning bassist Christopher Dean Sullivan weave a tapestry of poems and music at this free event including a wine and cheese reception. 6-8p at CILK119 (2nd Floor), 119 Main St, Nanuet.

  • Rock ‘n’ Roll Never Forgets with Dennis Elsas is an evening of rock and radio memories featuring highlights from Elsas’ history-making interviews with John Lennon, Elton John, Jerry Garcia and more. Elsas revisits the Top 40 radio that many grew up with, and the progressive evolution of WNEW-FM. He brings it full circle to WFUV and Sirius/XM. Advanced reservations required. 8p at Rockland Community College, 145 College Rd, Suffern.
  • Old No.7 Band returns with their blend of blues, bluegrass, R & B, and Rock. 9:30p at The Whiskey Kitchen, 60 Route 303, Valley Cottage.

Sunday

  • Join the celebration of the Purple Rose of Cairo, a film by Woody Allen, filmed in the Village of PiermontTitle: The (fake) Jewel Theatre during the filming of Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo over the winter of 1983-4 in in Piermont, NY. © Sally Savage photo. 30 years ago. Festivities include an exhibition of photographs by Sally Savage, documenting the film, a public art installation by Kris Burns, that starts at 1p, a roundtable discussion at the Piermont Village Hall at 3p bringing together those who worked on the film, and sharing the memories of those who witnessed how the film impacted the Village, and a champagne toast and a screening of the film at 6p. Piermont Village Hall, 478 Piermont Ave.
  • Piermont had a prominent role in the American Revolution and in Woody Allen’s Purple Rose of Cairo, too. Learn more about the village’s contribution to American history and the movie business during Train Station Sundays. The exhibit, Piermont During WWII: Last Stop USA is open 12-3p at the Piermont Train Station, 50 Ash St.
  • Historic Nyack Walking Tour: Visit the homes of Carson McCullers (author of Member of the Wedding), Hudson River school painter Julian O. Davidson, versatile artist Mortimer Borne, and others. Meet at 2p at the NW Corner of S Broadway and Cedar Hill Ave.
