Nyack Weekender: Winter Wonders

There might be a chill in the air, but there’s no need to hibernate! Catch some live music by the Jon Burr Jazz Quintet, The Jeff Rubin Band, The Old No. 7 Band and Frank Vignola and Vinny Raniolo. There’s theatre to be seen by the Children’s Shakespeare Theatre, art to be viewed by the Nyack Window Project and history to be relived at the Lasting Legacies 1915: The 40th Holiday Exhibition. Here’s your rundown of what to do and where to do it.

Friday

  • Jon Burr Jazz Quintet celebrates the launch of their new hard-bop album, Very Good Year. The Jon Burr Jazz Quintet is Jon Burr bass, leader, Tim Ouimette, trumpet, Steven Frieder, sax, Mike Eckroth, piano, and Jerome Jennings, drums.   • The Historical Society of Rockland invites the public to Lasting Legacies 1915: The 40th Holiday Exhibition. Part I, Happy 100th Birthday, Raggedy Ann, celebrates the beloved character while part II, A 1915 Congers Christmas, re-creates a parlor setting decorated for the holidays circa 1915. Wed-Fri 12- 4p, Sun 12-4p at HSRC, 20 Zukor Rd, New City.
  • The Jeff Rubin Band serves up classic rock in a great venue. 9:30p at Casa del Sol, 104 Main St, Nyack.
  • Bear Mountain Ice Rink is open for the winter! Adults $5, children (ages 4-22) $4. Check website for holiday hours. Bear Mountain Ice Rink, Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.
  • Window shopping in Nyack takes on a whole new meaning from now through Jan 31. The Nyack Window Project pairs visual artists with local landlords to create original installations in downtown storefront windows, a project conceived by award-winning set designer and Nyack resident Joanne Howard. Exhibits on Main St and Broadway in Nyack.

  • cst oneact festivalThe Children’s Shakespeare Theatre (CST) Winter Festival of One-Act Plays includes The Forced Marriage and The Learned Ladies (Moliere), (Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker) and As You Like It (Shakespeare). Check out The Sonnet Man, aka Devon Glover, a Brooklyn rapper, artist, writer, and teacher who sings Shakespeare’s sonnets as they were originally written and then again with his own unique interpretation. Drop in at any time to see a play or two and buy local wares and food. 11a-8p at The Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.

    Vignola & Vinny Raniolo

Sunday

  • Join Hedy Albert, naturalist and educator, for Winter is for the Birds. During this family nature program, learn about the birds visiting the neighborhood this winter and make a bird feeder for the backyard. 1-3p at Sterling Forest Visitor Center, Tuxedo Park, NY.
  • See the exhibit of Nyack artist William Bruckner. On display each Sun from 1-4p through Feb. Historical Society of the Nyacks, 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.
