Nyack Weekender: St. Patrick’s Day Edition

Your pot o’ gold awaits in Rockland! On Friday, local rock favorite, Boxing the Needle, performs at Olive’s while the Nyack Village Theatre hosts an evening of Irish Readings and Interpretations. On Saturday, get active with River Rowing’s fundraiser for the Nyack Center or Rockland Farm Alliance’s Open House. There’s art to be seen at the Expression of Women Rising at Volition Gallery and music to be heard at a concert featuring folk-favorite Caroline Doctorow and Jamie Block.  On Sunday, get in the spirit of the holiday at Pearl River’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Friday

• Boxing the Needle plays original and rock covers at 10p at Olive’s, 118 Main St, Nyack.
• Get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with an Evening of Irish Readings and Interpretations. 8p at Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St.
• A Time To Kill is a suspenseful courtroom drama infused with crisp humor while dealing with themes of racism, sexual violence and the legal system. Tickets here. Fri & Sat at 8p, Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
• The Man Who Came To Dinner is a 1930’s comedy about an injured radio personality whose abrasive ways terrorize the well-to-do family that is caring for him. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Antrim Playhouse, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Suffern.
• The comedy-musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers around two competing con men living on the French Riviera. Fri at 8p, Sat at 2p and 8p, Nyack High School, 360 Christian Herald Rd, Nyack.

Saturday

• Time to row – indoors! River Rowing’s 10th Annual Pull with Purpose Ergathon fundraiser to benefit the Nyack Center. 8:30a-11a at the RRA Studio, 256 Main Street, Nyack.
• Spend the day at Rockland Farm Alliance Open House. Help plant the sugar snap pea crop and leave with a seedling of your own. Meet the farmers, learn about biodynamic composting and take a foraging tour. 11a – 2p at Cropsey Farm, 220 S Little Tor Rd, New City.
• Opening reception for Expression of Women Rising at Volition Gallery. Female artists were asked to come together to tell their stories and share their visions through an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and photography along with live performances, of poetry, music, dance, and body painting. 7–10p at Volition Gallery, Bell-ans Center for Creative Arts, 2 Bell Lane, Orangeburg.
• Union Arts Center presents Caroline Doctorow and Jamie Block. Doctorow is a chart-topping Americana /folk singer and songwriter with a stirring voice that recalls Judy Collins and Sandy Denny. Tickets here. 8p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St., Sparkill.
• Check out the debut of The Roues Brothers History of Blues To Rock Series, a close look at the recorded history of blues harp and guitar duos. The spotlight is on the double bass/guitar/drums sounds of the founding years of Chicago blues and early rock’n’roll, plus Roues Brothers originals. • Learn about the Hudson Valley’s Dutch origins dating back to the 1600’s at the  Dutchtown and Major Andre: Highlights of Haverstraw History exhibit, presented by the Historical Society of Rockland and the Town of Haverstraw. Exhibit runs Wed–Fri and Sun from 12-4p until May 15. Exhibit reception: 12-4p at HSRC History Center, 20 Zukor Rd, New City.
• Where We Are Standing: Contemporary Women Artists from Iran. Three artists who grew up in Iran before moving to North America share a strong cultural identity and a common focus on issues of gender and displacement shaped by the complex political and social landscape of their homeland. Featuring the work of Golnar Adili, Roya Farassat, and Shabnam K. Ghazi. Exhibit runs through April 24.  Wed-Sun 12-6p at the  Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

• Did you know that the 2nd largest St. Patrick Day Parade in NYS is in Pearl River? Join the festivities at 1:30p on Main St, Pearl River.
• Sparkill Salon Series presents The Last Romantic with pianist Nadejda Vlaeva who plays in the grand manner of Liszt, the super-virtuosity of Godowsky, and the nostalgia of the last great Russian Romantics –Bortkiewicz and Drozdoff. 3p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Ave, Sparkill.
• VCS and NOW of Rockland County screens She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, a film that resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. 2:30 – 4p at The Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
• The Rockland Symphony Orchestra welcomes the new season with Spring Ahead with Music, a full symphony concert. Rockland Conservatory’s Main Street Singers and The Green Meadow School Chorus supply the vocals. 4p at Green Meadow Rose Concert Hall, Rt. 45 & Hungry Hollow Rd, Chestnut Ridge.
• The Karkowska Sisters, Anna on violin and Kasha on piano, perform 60 Minutes Around the World. 1:30p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303.
• Stop by Nyack Business: Long Before the Malls at The Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum featuring photographs and memorabilia from local businesses in the Time Before The Malls. Open Sundays through May 29. 1p at Depew House, 50 Piermont Ave.
