NB Tappan Zee Bridge Will Be Slow: Know Before You Go

Sat 11:15a update: “The Thruway Authority is happy to report that Tappan Zee Constructors completed its work well ahead of schedule. We began reopening northbound/westbound lanes on the Tappan Zee Bridge at 10a. No further lane closures on the bridge are required this weekend. We would like to thank motorists and the residents of Grand View and South Nyack for their patience and understanding during this time.” — Khurram Saeed, Director of Communications,
New NY Bridge Project

Nyack Friday, April 29 — Beginning at 9p tonight, three north bound lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge will be closed to accommodate construction of the new bridge. Have no fears about getting in your car unaware of what’s in in store  — because  we have an app for that.
ThruwayWebcamScrCaptureHere’s what you need to know:

  • On Friday April 29 at 9p, three right northbound lanes will be closed until 10a 2p Saturday (4/30)
  • On Saturday April 30 at 9p, three right northbound lanes will be closed until 2p Sunday (5/1)

You can “know before you go” by visiting a new app NyackNewsAndViews has developed which provides five NYS Thruway webcam views of the bridge. Go to NyackNewsAndViews.com/tzbcameras/ and you can see if the wait is a minute or an hour.
The app is a webpage with five icons for each of the traffic cameras on the bridge. Click an icon and the image displayed is for that camera.
You also might be wondering why all of these lanes will be closed.
It’s because of New NY Bridge construction — specifically the installation of six 75-foot long prefabricated piles which will be used to support he new bridge’s southbound road deck. That work will take place under the existing Tappan Zee Bridge.”This foundation work is part of a revised sequence of events to the construction process that the engineering team developed to minimize noise, water quality impacts, and temporary traffic patterns in the future,” said the Thruway Authority. “[This] plan allows this work to take place at the least traveled times of the week to minimize traffic impacts, and enables it to occur with current construction activities, eliminating the need for additional work in the future.”
Of course, if you are sitting in a loooooong traffic jam this weekend, you are welcome to disagree with their “least traveled times of the week” assessment.
The Thruway Authority says the work will include periodic pile driving. Workers will be using vibratory hammers and noise-reducing shrouds during the operation to limit impacts on nearby residents as part of the project’s noise mitigation efforts.  There will also be periodic traffic stops lasting up to 10 minutes of all four lanes of the northbound Thruway from exit 9 (Tarrytown – Sleepy Hollow – US Route 9) to the Tappan Zee Bridge will occur.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day acknowledged the inconvenience on Friday by increasing the number of TZ Express buses in service. “This is going to be a very difficult weekend for people who are driving between Westchester and Rockland,” Day said. “We hope to make it a little easier by putting these extra buses in service.”
Motorists who need to travel between Rockland and Westchester this weekend but want to avoid the traffic, may want to consider the George Washington Bridge or the Bear Mountain Bridge. Or maybe just stay home.
