If you are dreaming of traveling to Italy to experience all it has to offer, Linda Sassano Higgins, an artist who has studied and painted in many of the regions of Italy, Italian language tutor,  Italian travel consultant and teacher, presents Authentic Italia on Tue Apr 26 at 7p at the Nyack Library.  She will tell you about the fascinating diversity that you will find in Italian culture, cuisine and of course wine and will help you prepare for your trip.  Topics to be covered include: types of places to stay, transportation, customs and common pitfalls to avoid.
Here are some interesting facts about Italy:

  • Italian citizens who are at least 18 years old can vote for the lower house in the parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, but in order to vote for the upper house, the Senate, an Italian Citizen must be at least 25 years old.
  • The unofficial national animal of Italy is the Italian wolf. It plays a large role in the legend of the founding of Rome.
  • There are two independent states within Italy: the Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City.  San Marino is the world’s oldest republic and holds the world’s oldest continuous constitution.  Vatican City is the only nation in the world that can lock its own gates at night.  It has its own phone company, radio, TV stations, money and stamps.  It also has its own army, the Swiss Guard.

Registration is required for the Tuesday 7p presentation of Authentic Italia.

Even without a large garden, organically grown vegetables are possible on patios, balconies, and decks. Vivienne Dieckmann, Master Gardener with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Rockland, will show you that by using the right container, rich soil, proper watering techniques, and maximum sunlight, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and many more vegetables are steps away from the kitchen. With the addition of colorful annuals, crops in pots are attractive elements to the landscape. Registration is required
