Nyack Weekender: Festival Fri, Sat & Sun

It’s the first Friday of festival season, including the Nyack Art Collective’s First Friday’s celebration of LGBT pride, a Greek fest, Polish fest, DaVinci Film fest, Craft Beer fest and the Haverstraw Food Crawl. This Fri-Sun list of what to do and where to do it is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

Friday

  • nyack art collective festivalIt’s the First Friday of June and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival begins at the Gazebo at Cedar and Main with a performance by kid’s favorite, Danna Banana and scenes from Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors by Strange Bedfellows. Check out a group show at Prohibition River at 7p, 82 Main St. Head to Casa del Sol at 8p, 104 Main St, to see a LGBT-themed exhibit, plus live music by Jennifer O’Conner, Katie Elevitch and DJ Luis Williams, hosted by Alex Francisco. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 5p -1a.
  • Opa! This year’s Greek Festival features Mediterranean food, live music, dancing, games and rides. Fri from noon – midnight, Sat from 11a – midnight, Sun from noon to 8p at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1 Marycrest Rd, W Nyack.
  • Enjoy some Jazz on the Vine by the Richie Morales Quartet. 7:30-9p at Torne Valley Vineyards, Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.
  • Rainmaker tells the story of a spinsterish farm gal who worries about her marriage prospects more than about their dying cattle. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 1p, Antrim Playhouse, 15 Spook Rock Rd, Suffern.
  • The Immigrant is a true story of the playwright’s grandfather, a Jewish man who in 1909 emigrated from Russia to claim a stake in the American Dream. Fri at 2 & 8p, Sat at 4 & 8p, Sun at 2p. Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Crickettown Rd, Stony Point.
  • Next to Normal is a moving pop-rock musical for audiences who want to feel everything in one theatrical ride. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p at Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.ad_BikeNyack255x219

Saturday

  • Join Bike Nyack for a 25 mile Sat morning spin to Westwood, NJ. 830a at Memorial Park, the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves.
  • Learn to Row with the help of experienced rowers from the River Rowing Association. 8:30a at Rockland Lake State Park, lot #6.
  • Visit the Historic Houses of Worship in Haverstraw with the Historical Society of Rockland County. Meet at 8:45a at the village parking lot, 40 New Main St, Haverstraw.
  • craft beer festivalCheck out a Book Sale to benefit the Nyack Library. Sat from 10 – 4:30p, Sun from Noon – 4p at Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway.
  • The Lower Hudson Valley Craft Beer Festival features over 50 breweries, including favorite local and domestic breweries, live music with Joe D’Urso and Josh Casano and BBQ. Noon – 8p at Growler & Gill Craft Beer Shoppe, 148 Rt 59, Nanuet.haverstraw-foodcrawl-flyer-2016-site

Sunday

  • The Polish Festival offers Polish traditional food and music, live entertainment and various shows. Sat & Sun from 11a – 10p at German Masonic Park, 120 Western Hwy, Tappan.
  • Treasures from Our Collection at The Historical Society of the Nyacks Museum features unique items from Nyack’s long history. Open Sundays through July. 1p at Depew House, 50 Piermont Ave.
  • Opening reception for a Juried Art Exhibit & Sale to benefit Rockland County Pride. On display through July. 1 – 5p at Rockland Center for the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.
  • Savor and celebrate the diverse cuisine of the Taste of Haverstraw Food Crawl. Live outdoor music and over 15 participating restaurants. 2 – 6p throughout downtown Haverstraw.men cooking
  • Treat your tastebuds at Men Cooking, a food tasting fundraising event. Proceeds from tickets go directly into the Nyack Center’s programs to assist children and families in need. Local chefs and home cooks alike prepare everything from BBQ to cream puffs, international treats and secret family recipes. 5-7p, Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Piermont Train Station Museum opens for the 2016 season on Sun June 5. Sponsored by the Piermont Historical Society. Free admission, 12n-3p. 50 Ash Street.
  • Special after hours showing of a little known film about Marlon Brando, Listen to Me Marlon, with an introduction by the director, Tom Mazziotti. 9 – 11p at Palisades Free Library, 14 Closter Rd.

Wednesday

  • Rivertown Film screens Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict, a film that explores a life intertwined with art. A post-screening discussion follows with Peggy Guggenheim’s daughter, a curator at the Guggenheim Museum. 8 – 10p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Car enthusiasts should check out the Bear Mountain Cruise Show. There’s also a DJ, bounce house and food. Every Wed until 9/7 from 5-9p at Palisades Parkway or Route 9W, N Bear Mountain.
