Nyack Weekender: A Fest For Us

There’s a flurry of festivals coming to Rockland: Set sail to Haverstraw’s RiverArts Fest, the Italian Feast and Carnival, Oktoberfest at Bear Mountain and Piermont’s Multi-Fest Day. Plus a free Mary Poppins outdoor movie and sing-along Friday night on Main Street. Our weekly Fri-Sun rundown of what to do and where and where to do it is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

Friday

  • The annual Italian Feast and Carnival is a four-day celebration of all things Italian featuring performances, vendors with gifts and food, children’s games and rides. Fri from 5p – midnight, Sat from 11a – midnight, Sun from noon – 9p. German Masonic Park, 120 Western Hwy, Tappan.
  • Sing along to a Outdoor Screening of Mary Poppins. Sponsored by Nyack Hospital, the Village of Nyack, Festoon, and Rivertown Film. 8p at Artopee Way Parking Lot, Main St, Nyack.
  • boeingCheck out the fast-paced play, Boeing Boeing. A swinging ‘60s bachelor, Bernard is happily engaged to three gorgeous stewardesses but he runs into turbulence when all three of his fiancées arrive in town simultaneously. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • Check out Sculpture in the Garden, featuring the work of James Tyler and Santi-Hitorangi. Exhibit on display Wed – Sun, 12 -5p, through Oct 23. Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday

  • Join Bike Nyack for a community ride that follows the Hackensack River through Rockland and Bergen counties to Oradell, NJ. Meetup at 830a at Nyack Memorial Park, the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves. This event is part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble, an annual September series that celebrates the history, culture and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
  • haverstrawHaverstraw RiverArts River Arts & Music Festival commemorates the 400th anniversary of Dutch naming of Haverstraw. 4 bands are set to perform: Underground Horns (brass band), Blind Boy Paxton (Blues), Nyack’s The Foxfires (Indie Rock) and Three Pints Shy (Celtic Rock). River-centric activities include kid’s entertainment, craft vendors and a sculpture event where professional artists incorporate natural found objects. Noon – 6p at Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.
  • As part of the RiverArts Festival, set sail to the Hudson’s seafaring past on the Historic Schooner Pioneer. Two sailings are scheduled throughout the day, on the South Street Seaport’s Schooner Pioneer. Get tickets here. Noon – 6p at Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.
  • Attend a Biodiversity Celebration and learn about local habitats while discovering ways to help protect and provide habitats for wildlife. Live animal presentation in amphitheater at 1:30p. 11a – 3p at Bear Mountain State Park, 3006 Seven Lakes Dr.
  • Everyone’s invited to Bear Mountain for the 2016 Oktoberfest where families can partake in German food and beer, entertainment and craft vendors. Occurs every weekend through Oct. 12-6p, Anthony Wayne Recreation full-moonArea, Palisades Interstate Parkway, Bear Mountain.
  • RoCA’s Full Moon Party provides a rare glimpse into iron foundry practices including iron and ice sculptures , live performances by Country Fresh and The Used Karmas, an artist talk by Elizabeth Sayles called ‘The Ghost Army’ and art exhibits on view. 5-9p at Rockland Center For the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, W Nyack.
  • The Historical Society of Nyack hosts Van Houten’s Landing Historic Neighborhood exhibit. Weekly on Sat from 1-4p at 50 Piermont Ave, Nyack.
  • Last weekend to view the Edward Hopper House feature photographer David LaChapelle’s Gas Station Series. LaChapelle is renowned for his celebrity photographs, music videos and films. On display through Sept 11. 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

Guided walking tour of Piermont’s Historic District along the Sparkill Creek to the Rockland Road Bridge. Meet at 10a in parking lot behind Confetti’s Restaurant on Ash St.

Hike along the scenic Erie path to Piermont’s Train Station and learn about Piermont’s unique and diverse history. 12 – 3p at Piermont Historical Society, 50 Ash St.

 Art in the Park exhibits over 100 artists from 1 – 6p in Flywheel Park, 10 Roundhouse Rd.

Lobsterfest features great food, craft beverages and live music from The Jug Addicts. Goswick Pavillion, Ferry Rd on the Pier.

  • See Nyack through the eyes of artist Edward Hopper on a tour that highlights the influence of light, water and architecture on his art. 2p at Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway.

Monday

Music Mondays: Irish Traditional Seisiun, plus offerings by the chefs of Halo and Horns. 6p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Dr, Sparkill.

Wednesday

Vintage cars roll into the Bear Mountain Car Cruise along with a DJ, bounce house and food. Every Wed through Sept. 5-9p at Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Parkway or Route 9W N.
