Watch New NY Bridge Be Built in 2 Minutes

It’s hard to drive past, or over, the Tappan Zee Bridge on a regular basis and not marvel at the rapid growth of the New NY Bridge. Each season seemingly brings a new stage in the bridge’s embryonic development–from steel girders to concrete towers, from piles to road deck, from shoreline to shoreline. Now, it’s beginning to kick.
Tappan Zee Constructors recently completed the first two 419-foot towers of the main span. The new bridge will have a total of eight towers – four each on the eastbound and westbound spans. The first two westbound towers will soon be joined by an additional pair in the coming weeks.
Construction began on all eight concrete towers in the late summer of 2015 following the completion of the main span pile caps. Since then, the structures have risen above the existing Tappan Zee Bridge and revealed their angled profile. Their sleek, chamfered design was decided after the project’s Visual Quality Panel received input from hundreds of interested stakeholders.
The 3.1-mile New NY Bridge project is one of the largest active projects of its kind in the nation. You can watch the following time-lapse video, originally part of Governor Cuomo’s Day at the Great New York State Fair in Syracuse.
To learn more about the project, visit the New NY Bridge construction viewing platforms at Scenic Hudson RiverWalk Park in Tarrytown or at Memorial Park in Nyack. Can’t make it in person? View the daily progress via the project’s webcams and photo gallery, or follow the project on Twitter and Instagram.
