Nyack Weekender: It’s a Women’s World!

There’s lots of women-centric events and performances in honor of International Women’s Day (March 8) and Women’s History Month. Catch Mayra Casales and Cocomama and the Anna Veleva Brunch Eupohoria at the Union Arts Center, or Feminine Musique, the Women of Vision and Leadership brunch, Sweet Georgia Brown or the Judi Marie Canterino Trio. Also: The Jewish Film Festival continues this week with three new movies.

Friday

Mayra Casales and Cocomama, an all women’s Latin Jazz band with influences from Afro-Cuban, Classical, Latin American, Jazz, Soul, R&B, and beyond, performs their own kind of World Latin Music.  Cocomama “brings it,” creating a sound that is all at once fierce and beautiful. • The Rock, Paper, Scissors exhibit opens featuring the art of Suzanna Frosch, Polly King, and John Rosis. These artists share a fierce commitment to formal structure as they collage and layer materials to create space and depth in an exhibit runs through May 21. Wed-Sun 12p-5p, Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

• In honor of Women’s History Month, the Carnegie Concert Series presents Feminine Musique with Korliss Uecker and Tammy Hensrud, accompanied by Christopher Oldfather. 7:30p, Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway, Nyack.

• Date and Create!  Couples, 21 yrs & older, can experience an art activity on their date and bring home a work of art. Enjoy a little wine and chocolate as you learn clay slab building to create a serving or hors d’oeuvres tray.  Reservations required.  Admission: $100 per couple. 7p, Rockland Center For the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.

• 13th Annual Women of Leadership and Vision Brunch honoring Kim-Adele Rosner, Charlene Weaver, Susan Yellen. The Historical Woman of Leadership and Vision is the late author Carson McCullers, who was born 100 years ago. Performance by Nyack’s Marla Pasquale. 10a, Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.

• Ever wanted to know more about the human brain?  At Brain Day at NKI you can learn all about the brain and even touch a real human brain! Free and open to the public.  Reservations recommended.  10a-3p, Nathan Klein Institute, 35 Third Ave, Orangeburg.

• The Legendary Sweet Georgia Brown will be performing with her Harlem Blues All Starz at Sixty5 on Main. 9p, 65 Main St, Nyack.

Looking to take your Sunday brunch up a notch? Anna Veleva’s Brunch Euphoria will feature the finest from Halo & Horns cuisine “topped” with the best arias from the Opera & Broadway repertoire treasury.  Performers include: Sopranos; Anna Veleva and Samantha Brown, Tenor;  Teo Ricardella, and Pianist; Chris Oldfather. 11a-1p, Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill.

• At Rockland County Youthfest you can interact with many of the services available to children, youth and families under one roof with no admission fee and no fees for any services, activities, etc. provided during the course of the day. 11a-4p, Rockland County Community College, 145 College Rd, Suffern.

• The Judi Marie Canterino Trio featuring Mark Shane and Steve Lamatina perform at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar at 6p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.

• You’ve probably tasted his desserts or admired his photography at The Hudson House. This month you can also see some of restaurateur Matt Hudson’s woodworking at the Valley Cottage Library. There will be an opening reception from 1p-3p at the Valley Cottage Library, 110 Route 303. • The Nyack Public Library and Blue Rock School are pleased to present a free screening of Most Likely to Succeed, an edu-documentary by Ted Dintersmith and Greg Whiteley, which takes a closer look at the role and effects of education in America today.
