Nyack People & Places: Yoga Teachers Betsy Ceva & Charlene Bradin

by Mike Hays
Relax, heal, stretch, breathe…and smile. Charlene Bradin and Betsy Ceva are celebrating 20 years of providing yoga practice and massage in Nyack at the Birchwood Center. Beginners, yogis, kids, seniors, pregnant women, and aspiring teachers build balance and flexibility through asana practice, meditation, and active massage in their beautiful light-filled studios on South Broadway.

Betsy taught dance and learned traditional yoga in San Francisco and after moving to Greenwich, CT, commuted to Nyack to practice yoga with Paula Heitzner (who learned from Pierre Bernard, an early founder of yoga in America) at the New Age Center. Soon she was teaching classes herself. Charlene became a massage therapist and also learned yoga from Paula. They started teaching classes in their spacious front room atv their residence on Birchwood Avenue near Center Street in Upper Nyack; hence, the name of their business.
They renovated their first studio in commercial space on South Broadway in the back of the second floor of what was once a sewing factory (above a feed store on the first floor). Over time they have expanded to two studios and three massage rooms on the entire floor with 14 yoga teachers and six massage therapists. Classes are conducted at three levels and include gentle, restorative, and vinyasa flow at convenient times from early morning to early evening.
Nyack has always been a special place to Charlene and Betsy. They recognize Nyack as a village that has fostered a wide variety of healers and artists that have benefited from the power and spiritual energy of the Hudson River.
They will hold a celebration party on May 7 at their studios.
