The Villages: Parade, Pride, Mostly Music, Summer Camp — and Drones

This Week in The Villages: There was ample time for reflection and celebration in Nyack this weekend. First, there was the annual Firefighter’s Memorial Service. Then there was Pride Sunday, a joyous opportunity to celebrate the LGBTQ community. Attn Nyack area parents: registration for Camp Nyack is now open. Listen to this: the 2017 Mostly Music concert schedule is now set. Clarkstown looks to the skies for its latest crime-fighting device.

Hammond’s Highlights

by Don Hammond
On Sunday, June 11th the Fire Departments that serve Nyack held their Annual Firefighter’s Memorial Service to give tribute to those who served our community. It is a time to reflect on the service of those who have given their lives keeping us safe. And it’s a reminder of the sacrifice this amazing group of men and women make. They sacrifice their time, energy and sometimes their lives to keep us safe. This service always reminds me to thank the people that protect us; they make Nyack an amazing place to live.
From that moving gathering, I headed to another: Pride Sunday. This year, hundreds of friends and neighbors enjoyed food, kids’ arts activities, live music, a parade and a foot-stomping Battle of the High School Bands. Executive Director Brooke Malloy and her Pride co-founders were still celebrating the $250,000 grant the Center received from New York State last week. All in all, it was a wonderful day to celebrate our vibrant, inclusive community.

Camp Nyack

Registration for Camp Nyack, which is operated by the Nyack Center, is open. The camp operates throughout the summer and funding from the village allows for an additional week of fun this summer. Contact the Nyack Center for more information.

Mostly Music and ’90s Night

The Nyack Park Conservancy is continuing the Mostly Music program this summer. It has been a staple in Nyack for over 20 years. This year there will be five concerts in Memorial Park. The concerts will be held on the following Tuesdays: June 27, July 11, 18, & 25 and August 1st. In order to sustain events like these, the conservancy appreciates donations from the public.  Their website (Nyackparks.org) has additional information on the concerts and how you can make a donation.

On June 16, the conservancy is hosting a ’90s night at Prohibition River, which means it’s almost time to trot out your best grungewear. Dan Caprara and I will be two of the judges for the music contest.

On the Waterfront

The next Local Waterfront Revitalization Program public workshop will be held at the American Legion Hall at 85 Piermont Ave at 7:30p on June 20. These workshops are to help guide the development of a plan to upgrade our waterfront throughout the village. Come out and share your ideas.
The village board is set to accept a proposal from a company to offer human powered boating options at the marina this summer. A proposal to provide sailboat charters is also under consideration.
