Climate Champs Honored for Earth Month

Marcy Denker and Steve Cea were recognized by the legislature last week as Climate Champions — an honor bestowed in celebration of Earth Month — for their leadership on Nyack 2030 and the Nyack Tree Project.

Marcy Denker is a landscape designer and consultant, focusing on ecological design, according to her bio. She is credited with helping Nyack become the first Bronze-certified Climate Smart and designated Clean Energy Community in Rockland. (Editor’s note: Denker is also an occasional contributor to Nyack News & Views and the author a monthly newsletter called “Green News”.)

She also co-founded the Nyack Tree Committee and established the Nyack Tree Project, a volunteer effort to plant and maintain hundreds of trees in Nyack.

In 2023, she completed the Nyack 2030 Climate Action Plan that provides a roadmap for reducing Nyack’s community and local government greenhouse gas emissions by at least 75% from 2018 levels by 2030.

Steven Cea has worked on climate and sustainability issues as a member of the Nyack Tree Committee and Co-Chair of Nyack’s Climate Smart Committee.

Cea is an Energy Navigator volunteer trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension to assist residents reduce their energy consumption and accessing incentives.

He also works to promote electric vehicles, as well as clean heating and cooling systems.

The awards were given our April 16 by Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson.
