Resist Hate Rally in Nyack

We came together at a local restaurant about a week after the election to discuss our fears and our frustrations. We didn’t all know each other; we each knew only a few others in the group of 12. We all came from different backgrounds and from all over New York State and the country, including Rockland County. What we had in common was that we were living in Rockland County and we were concerned.Resist Hate Rally

I imagined, as I sat there, that groups of people were meeting like this all over Nyack and all over the United States, trying to figure out what happened and what to do next.
Yes, we shared our reactions, but, more importantly, we also prepared to take action. First, unity and social justice. We discussed how we wanted to help ensure safety for everyone, specifically local people in vulnerable communities. We discussed the necessity of creating the space for open dialogues between people who disagree. We expressed our plans to get more involved in local politics, including get-out-the-vote initiatives. We discussed many other things.
Several meetings later, we have officially started Rockland United, with the current intention of becoming a Political Action Group.
We decided that our first action will be a #ResistHate Rally in the center of Nyack, Sunday December 18, at 3p. This will be at the Veteran’s Park Gazebo, at the corner of Main Street and Cedar Street. This is an opportunity for Rockland residents to speak out against hatred and intolerance. We intend to stand up, stand strong…and stand together in the face of whatever is to come.

This rally will bring residents together to affirm values of tolerance and social justice, and to share actions we can take to protect our communities, defend democracy, and build a country that works for everyone.

The response to this event, from both community leaders and elected officials, has been enthusiastic. “I think any action that encourages kindness and love and condemns hate is important and wonderful. And that’s what Nyack is all about,” said Nyack Mayor Jen White, who will be speaking at the event.
So please come out to #ResistHate on Sunday afternoon. Bring your signs and bring your voices. And rest assured that no matter what the weather is that day, we’ll be in this, all of it, together.
