iTZX: An interactive Tappan Zee Express bus schedule

May 27, 2008

It’s the first day back after a long holiday weekend. We can’t do anything about the length of your commute. But we might be able to help you make your next connection on time.

Checkout iTZX, our new interactive Tappan Zee Express schedule which puts you one click away from a list of TZX bus/train departures in the next two hours. iTZX shows you an easy-to-read list of eastbound buses to Tarrytown or and westbound trains from Grand Central for your stop. And it’s all accessible from your desktop or any mobile Internet-enabled device.

Try it and tell us what you think. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Now Appearing at Riverspace: The Riverspace Show

May 26, 2008

Fans of reality TV, high stakes dramas and social documentaries are in for a big treat. And if you live in Nyack, you won’t have to leave the zip code to see the free performance.

Riverspace presents their plans for a reborn downtown Nyack on June 5th. This follows up meetings in February, April and May to discuss redevelopment of the property which includes the arts center, the adjacent strip mall, Veteran’s Park and the M&T Bank. Riverspace board members Josh Goldberg and Debbie Reich have proposed a mixed-use development with a new arts center as the anchor. They hope to replace the current unsustainable patchwork of donors and volunteers with a new business model that produces commercial and residential rental income that will help fund Riverspace.

election results

We saw the winners of last Tuesday’s elections. we were also able to see how was the vote distributed in the four polling locations. I was surprised at the high turnout Valley Cottage displayed.

I am very interested in finding out how was the the vote distributed among the candidates for each voting area. If such info was published, I will be greatful if somebody directs me to it. If it was not published, how can I find out?

Whose Afraid of Elmwood Playhouse?

The current production of Elmwood Playhouse is “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”.

This four-actor play is perfectly suited for a small theater like EPH. A 99-seat venue means no microphones and during the fight scenes you feel like the actors will fall into your lap. At one point “George” stands up on a chair and towers above you – a strange sensation for an audience member!

This a powerful adult-oriented drama and has a Nyack connection with Bill Irwin starring in the Broadway production in NYC and London. Those of you who saw him on Broadway will appreciate Elmwood’s production even more because of the intimacy. He doesn’t appear in this production but the large number of actors who showed up for the auditions (over 50) means that the four chosen are really the cream of the non-equity crop in this region, Continue reading →

Where Have All The Shad Fish Gone?

May 23, 2008

It’s been an annual happening on the Hudson for the last thousand years. The shad run has been a welcome sign of spring since the Lenape Indians lived on the Hudson’s shores. But Riverkeeper’s 19th annual Shadfest was Shad-less last Sunday.

If Dogs Could Vote

May 19, 2008

An Election Commentary by Murphy The Golden Retriever about the Tues May19 School Board Election

I always say, if you’ve got it flaunt it. If I could vote, I would. Instead I just wave my very pretty tail in the face of smaller dogs. But I still wish I could vote. And have opposable thumbs. OK, maybe I’d go with the opposable thumbs first – it would make pulling the lever in the voting booth easier to do.

I saw in the paper – right before I peed on it – that only 13% of the registered humans in Nyack voted in last year’s school board election. That’s unbelievable! In my world, that would be like only 1 in 10 dogs taking the opportunity to mark their territory. We dogs feel that marking territory is an unalienable right. I hear some of the humans feel that way about marking ballots, too.

So if I were you, I’d go out on Tuesday and exercise a right that dogs all over the world and a fair number of humans wish they could, too. And if you are walking to your polling place, bring your dog. If we can’t exercise the same freedoms as you, at least we can exercise our legs.

Mini-Riot Arrests Made in Spring Valley

May 14, 2008

Police say they have arrested the Spring Valley ring leader behind last month’s mini-riot in South Nyack.

Orangetown police Detective Lieutenant James Brown says Malcolm Pitt, an 18 year old from Spring Valley, is believed to be the ringleader of the Spring Valley gang that came to Nyack on April 16.  Jesse Jones and Malcolm Dupree, both 19 and from Spring Valley, were also arrested in connection with the incident.

All three were charged with first-degree attempted gang assault and two counts of second-degree assault. A fourth teen has been accused of wielding an axe during the incident. Nineteen year old Karl Dubuisson of Nyack was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony offense.
