The Tappan Zee Express has always made it easy to get from Rockland to the Metro North stations in Tarrytown and White Plains — if you have a short walk or easy drive to the bus stop. Now, there’s another way to connect with the TZx: ride your bike to the bus. Continue reading →
Saturday To Do: Clean Up The River at Piermont
Riverkeeper and Teva footware are sponsoring a hands-on opportunity to help clean up the Hudson by removing ecologically hazardous trash from at the Piermont Pier. Volunteers will meet on Saturday, July 26 from 10:30a to 1p in Piermont at the pier. Kayakers can do their part, too, by paddling from Nyack’s Memorial Park to Piermont starting at 9am and picking up trash from the water.
Participants will have a chance to win tickets to see Jack Johnson perform at Liberty State National Park in NJ, August 8-10.
Additional information and directions are available from Riverkeeper.
Two arrested in Nyack 2am Saturday Brawl
Two men were arrested for disorderly conflict in a early Saturday morning altercation at Nyack Plaza.
Orangetown Police Detective Lt. James Brown says about 20 people were involved, with another 20 onlookers.
A passerby walking to his car was slashed on the face, requiring more than 100 stitches, according to the police.
Putting leaves/compost in those paper bags? Don’t bother.
It took a bit of sleuth work, but I think I understand about the paper bags for leaves and small brush. Seeing them out on the curb around the Village, I wondered how to get them and if they are going to a composting facility.
Unfortunately they are not. They just get thrown in with the trash by our Highway Department. If you live in an unincorporated part of the Town of Orangetown, your compostable materials are picked up and taken to the Town of Clarkstown’s composting facility. It is the big pile of smelly material at the corner of Rte 303 and Rte 59 that you can sometimes smell from the mall’s parking lot.
The County is apparently working on a plan to deal with trash separation, so that recyclable and compostable material doesn’t end up in the landfill. The Village has a group working on ways to make itself more “green”. Separating compostable materials from the waste stream would be a good start.
If you do want a bundle of those paper bags for free, you can go to the Town of Orangetown Hall and pick one up. All you need to do is write down you name and address on a list.

Nyack Offers Fast-Pay Parking Fine Discount
The Village Board will tweak Nyack’s parking fee and fine structure for violators who pay up prior to their court date. Beginning September 1, parking fees will be reduced from $25 to $15 if the fine is paid prior to the court date.
In April, the Village Board voted to reduce this penalty if the ticket was paid within two days. This vote extends the grace period a few weeks. Most traffic court dates are scheduled two to five weeks from the ticket issue date.

The Concerned Citizen, June/July 2008
CONCERNED CITIZENS FOR RESPONSIBLE DEVELOPMENT is a group which opposes building a new Tappan Zee Bridge.
We are currently faced with a choice between a bridge or a bridge. The process remains stalled over rehabilitation of the current bridge or a new bridge. However, there are sufficient reasons to revisit and review the Department of Transportation’s decision to eliminate the tunnel option. Continue reading →
Monday Main Street Fire in Nyack
Nyack’s Main Street was shut down for an hour on Monday afternoon as over 50 fireman put out a blaze at the RC custom T-Shirt store.
The fire at 95 1/2 Main St. was reported at 3:20 p.m. when employee Katie Beary, 19, and customer Bella Zarember, 13, smelled smoke in the store. Beary at first turned off a heat press in the store thinking it was the cause, but then saw smoke coming up from the floorboards at the front of the store.
“I just grabbed my bag and ran out,” Beary said. “At least I didn’t cause the fire, that’s all I care about. But, yeah, we definitely got freaked out.”
