PERFORMANCE ART FLOTILLA COMES TO NYACK’S MEMORIAL PARK

August 28, 2008

Thursday, August 28, 8pm (Rain Date, August 29th)
Admission free, bring a lawn chair or blanket
NYACK, NEW YORK — A fleet of seven intricately crafted boats fashioned out of scrap wood and other salvaged materials, as they sail down the Hudson River from Troy, NY to Deitch Studios in Long Island City, Queens , will serve as the site for a live theatrical and musical performance at Nyack’s Memorial Park. This event is presented in collaboration with The Friends of the Nyacks, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1974 for the betterment of the Nyacks.

The fleet, known as the “Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea,” was handcrafted by the international Artist SWOON, whose work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum.

Suitable for all ages, the performance, guided by OBIE award-winning playwright Lisa D’Amour, will be delivered from the decks of the vessels and the banks of the river. The crew of the rafts tells tales of the possible myths that might surround the vessels, the crew and the journey. Live music will also serve as an integral part of the performance.

Each raft is powered with alternative energy sources, including bio-fuels and solar power. SWOON’s larger-than-life “invented landscape” installation at Deitch Studios will receive the fleet September 7. The show opens to the public that day.

GPS Alert: Geocaching Walk in Tallman

August 27, 2008

Here’s an opportunity for tech fans, hikers and gamers. As well as children of all ages.

Wikipedia describes Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. Rockland County will host a geocaching tutorial and hike Saturday August 30 at 9am in Tallman State Park in Sparkhill.

A Rockland County trail guide docent will teach Geocaching using a Global Positioning System (GPS) as part of a 2-3 mile hike. Hikers should bring a GPS if they have one but it is not required.

Nyack Threatdown Fear #1: Quakes!

August 24, 2008

ScienceNow Daily News says the NYC area is due for an earthquake. Yes, *this* New York City.

Geoscientists at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY count 383 sesmic events in our area since 1677. The research was compiled as part of studies for a new Tappan Zee Bridge and re-licensing Indian Point. You have to go back to 1884 to find a quake of magnitude five or greater. But in geological terms, that’s a blink of an eye.

Perhaps this is good material for a Nyack area author with writer’s block looking for their next best seller. If you someday soon see titles like

Panic in The Palisades
,
Hudson Horror or
Nyack, The Village Under The Hudson
try not to be too surprised.

Tilting at Windmills on the New TZB

August 21, 2008

Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner says windmills should be added to plans for a new Tappan Zee Bridge. Feiner made the suggestion at a Las Vegas conference on alternative energy this week.

Feiner wrote the following on his blog earlier this week, following up comments made by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the same conference. Continue reading →

NYS Affirms Indian Point’s Adverse Impacts

Riverkeeper and Scenic Hudson applaud DEC’s progress towards Clean Water Act enforcement

(Tarrytown, NY) The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has determined that the Indian Point nuclear power plant’s cooling water intake system causes adverse environmental impacts on Hudson River fish. The DEC will now move forward to require closed cycle cooling at Indian Point, which would reduce water usage and fish kills by 95 percent or more. Hearings on the new draft permit, which would mandate closed cycle cooling, are tentatively scheduled for spring, 2009. The legal decision was authored by Assistant Commissioner of the DEC J. Jared Snyder, and published on August 15, 2008. Continue reading →

FINE: Too Much (United) Water

August 19, 2008

United Water customers will be getting more information than requested in upcoming bills. But they might not be getting the news that they need to know.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the utility released more water than allowed between June and September 2007 and has levied a $10,000 fine on United Water for allowing too much water out of the Lake Deforest Reservoir in Rockland County. Another $7,500 will be suspended as long as United Water adheres to the agreement. Continue reading →

Dogs Deserve Their…Doo?

August 18, 2008

Here’s another story about dogs and what they doo — or can’t do — at Memorial Park.

When Village Trustees Denise Hogan, Richard Kavesh, Marie Lorenzini and Louise Parker voted earlier this year against changing village law to allow off-leash dogs before 9am in Memorial Park, they touched a nerve with the many friends of man’s best friend. Nyack area residents have been letting their four legged friends swim in the Hudson at the park before 9am for years, apparently without complaint. But new signs posted in the park last week make dogs’ doggy paddling a thing of the past. Continue reading →
