2009 Best Gumbo in Nyack: Velo!

February 28, 2009

2009 Nyack Gumbo Winner

It was still chilly, but 10 restaurants came out to flaunt their gumbo making prowess at Nyack’s 2nd Annual Gumbo Cookoff. As Nyack’s Mardi Gras winds down tomorrow, people came out to taste some northern versions of cajun cuisine.

Defending champion Bourbon Street was unable to repeat with the panel of judges, as the freshman Velo pulled an upset.  Bourbon Street did tie the Hudson House in the popular contest, voted by ballot by all those who came by to taste.

It couldn’t of hurt that Velo was able to keep their Gumbo the warmest.

Village Board Meeting — Parking and Pain

villagehallsign2Last night’s meeting was largely about parking, and it was painful.  Unlike the overflowing last meeting, it was an intimate setting with about 20 people in the audience, which included those reporting to the Board.

First were reports from Treasurer John Cincotta and Attorney Walter Sevastion.  One notable item was that the long awaited zoning changes, which were to be reviewed by a program at Pace University, will be delayed because Pace said the project was too big.  The price was right, free, so now the Village will have to get proposals from various planning firms, which will not be free.

Then the discussion moved to parking, and the tone changed.

Tomorrow’s Village Board Meeting

Tomorrow’s Village Board meeting could be another interesting one.  There is an official public hearing on the parking rate increases.  So it’s a last chance for people to voice their concerns.  The Board will be voting to implement the increases on April 6, instead of June 1.

Another agenda item will be to look at the “Apollo” property, which is on the North side of Main Street between Midland and Highland.  It would involve acquiring a property, demolishing a concrete building, and creating about 16-20 spaces.  Some estimates would price the spots at about $30k each.

Hudson River film at the Nyack Library Tuesday 6:30pm

On Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30, the Nyack library will be showing the film America’s First River – Bill Moyers on the Hudson part one: Stories From the Hudson.

This is the first event at the Nyack Library commemorating the Hudson Fulton Champlain Quadricentennial. That means it is 400 years since Hudson came up the river and Champlain came down the lake. Fulton is thrown in there because it is a little over 200 years since his steam navigation of the river. The movie is a good introduction to the river, its history and culture. Part two (The Fight to Save the River) is on March 31st at 6:30.

There are many other programs scheduled for the year including lectures and a monthly book discussion group on Hudson River topics. The first book is Riverkeepers: Two Activists Fight to Claim Our Environment as a Basic Human Right by John Cronin and Robert Kennedy, Jr. We will discuss it on Tuesday March 10th at 7PM. A related lecture is also in the works. More details to follow soon.  For a full list of currently scheduled Quad events at the library click here.

Nyack’s Mardi Gras Dog Masquerade

dogparadewinnerWho says Nyack is no fun!  Mardi Gras is in full swing.  Saturday was the scene of many wacky activities, including the dog masquerade.

The winner was an exceptional dog named Goliath, who apparently wore those shades for two hours without flinching.
