Quadracentennial logoAward-winning storyteller, musician, poet, actor and writer David Gonzalez performs “Oh Hudson,” a suite of historical and colorfully descriptive poems with music that commemorates the Hudson River’s Quadricentennial.

Divided into three parts, “Oh Hudson” begins with the geological wonder of the river valley and the early exploration and development, part two takes us into the industrial age and Fulton’s steam engine, the final section is part rant and part prayer for a river that was deeply wounded and is now on a path of recovery.

July 30, 2009

August 27th is the trial date for Village of Nyack v. Romp Store. Owner Carol McIlmurray has argued that painting her store front is a freedom of speech issue. Nyack counters that McIlmurray is in violation of building and fire codes.  After a brief opening on July 4th, the store has been closed due to code violations.

Nyack Chamber Changes

By Gina Cambre and Carlo Pellegrini

The reorganization of the Chamber of Commerce of the Nyacks has recently raised questions among members, business owners and Chamber supporters.  While the organization has been focused on the strategic mission (Destination Nyack) and support for members, a prompt response to these queries has been regrettably delayed.

Romp’s Day In Court Is Thursday

Photo Credit: Sean Jones PhotoRomp Store owner Carol McIlmurray returns to court on 7/30 to respond to four counts issued by Nyack’s Building and Fire Department’s last month. The store has been closed since it opened briefly on July 4th, although painting of the facade has continued intermittently.

McIlmurray writes on her blog that she has suffered from “serious health issues… due to the stress of fighting the village of Nyack, the nasty comments from people who hate art, and not having much support from family or friends.”

Romp faces several thousands dollars in fines for opening without a fire permit.

Nyack Candidates Condemn Sign Thefts

July 28, 2009

by Dave Zornow

“Unlike stealing a lawn gnome or a plastic pink flamingo…stealing a lawn sign is a more heinous crime. There is moral and ethical guilt.”
Confessions of a Lawn Sign Stealer, The Huffington Post

Unlike the competitive jostling for placing babysitting, tennis lessons and yoga class posters in Nyack’s stores, lawn sign theft is a bit more serious. It’s a misdemeanor.  And Nyack’s candidates for public office are speaking out against it.

It’s Not Just a Parade; It’s a Circus

July 25, 2009

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is priceless.

For Nyack’s big moment with Minnie the elephant walking down Main and Broadway, a video is the way to go.

Nobody can sum things up like a child. “It’s not just a parade, it’s a circus”. Or “Is that it? Just one elephant?”

Mayor John Shields said “We have the greatest little show on earth in the greatest little village on earth.” There were a lot of other classic comments, we’d love to hear them if you heard any.

Nyack’s Circus

parade-rkaveshpicIt’s often been said that Nyack is such a wonderfully eclectic and eccentric place that Martians could land here, feel right at home, and blend right in, but even wizened villagers could never recall what thousands of enthusiastic spectators lining village streets saw this morning – an elephant parading down Main Street and Broadway before lumbering its way into Memorial Park.

Where Have All The Lawn Signs Gone?

by John Ballard

About three weeks ago we began placing lawn signs around the village to advertise Marianne Olive’s campaign for Mayor of Nyack. Then something funny happened: all eight of them disappeared simultaneously. So we replaced them. Then those new signs disappeared, too. Interestingly, I haven’t noticed this happening to any of the other candidates.
