Suzanne Barclay Closing Statement

Suzanne Barclay, Candidate for Orangetown Supervisor

I am running on a platform of responsible taxation, environmental protection and good government.

Responsible taxation requires careful oversight of revenues and expenditures in the Town budget. On the revenue side, this means promoting the redevelopment of town land at Rockland Psychiatric Center, initially the K. Hovnanian project, but other future projects as well. Successful completion of the K. Hovnanian project will result in $24million to the Town for the purchase of 80 acres, a new residential neighborhood of active adult housing, a renovated Broadacres Golf Course and $lm in annual tax revenue to the Town and $3m in annual tax revenue to the Pearl River School District.

Additionally, we need to partner with the Rockland Economic Development Corporation to promote Orangetown to new businesses looking to relocate.

On the expense side, the priority next year will be to negotiate contracts with the Town’s two unions that are fair to both Town employees and tax payers.

Environmental protection means addressing steep slope protection, flooding, erosion and runoff through local laws. It also entails monitoring the Tappan Zee Bridge project to identify and mitigate the potential impacts on the Town and its villages.

Good government means not accepting campaign contributions from vendors that do business with the Town, nor from unions whose contracts I may be negotiating. It also means exercising leadership in confronting controversial issues and fostering constructive dialogue about important public policy.
