Denise Hogan, Candidate for Mayor of Nyack
The future of Nyack’s leadership will be decided on November 3, 2009 and it is important that a candidate who has demonstrated commitment, advocacy, leadership and a vision be selected. I am that candidate.
The Mayor is the executive branch of local government responsible for running Village services. The mayor is committed to management with respect to issues such as safety, sidewalks, senior citizens, downtown small businesses, and taxpayers struggling during these uncertain times. As Mayor I will work with the board and department heads to address these issues and find suitable solutions. Having served on the Village Board for five years I have an intimate understanding of Village Government and know that there is a process and laws that must be adhered to. Finding solutions takes time and I will make it a priority to finish what is started in a timely fashion.
Downtown development is a topic many are concerned with. The board was not in a position to move on development when so many questions were left unanswered. A Citizen’s Committee was formed to address development and after months of meeting with professionals presented to the board recommendations on how to proceed. The board accepted the recommendations and at present is actively seeking funding for a feasibility study. If there is to be development we must first investigate what is best for both the residents’ and the businesses. I will support responsible development that increases our tax base and has little if any negative impact on our Village.
Our downtown is in need of a face lift. I am in favor of the Streetscape development plan, (sidewalks, landscape, signage, and light). It is the responsibility of the Village to maintain a downtown atmosphere that residents and visitors will enjoy. Improving the appearance and safety of our village is a good first step in attracting new businesses. It is our responsibility to send a positive message about our Village and all that it offers, making it a desirable investment. I am committed to cleaning up our downtown and will aggressively seek funding from town, county and state decision makers.
As Mayor I will continue working with the Orangetown Police, addressing the issues from resident, restaurants /bars and merchants. Because Nyack is a destination point for many people it is important to have open communication with the police so that issues of concern are addressed. I have had many meetings with the downtown, residents and the police and have seen an improvement in our quality of life.
As Mayor I will work on accountability and open and honest communication with the board, department heads and the public. I will look for ways to improve productivity without cutting quality services to our Village. We need to oversee a more effective and efficient Village with out losing the heart and soul of our community.
Nyack is my home and has been for all of my life. I lived here, worked here, raised a family here, had a business here, owned a home and rented. I can understand the concerns people have about taxes, I understand the need to keep our youth engaged, I can empathize with merchants when business is suffering, and I know the challenges of renting. With such deep roots and commitment to our Village I will be the voice of the people and the candidate for all of the people.
