Nyack Marina Gets NYS Grant

by Dave Zornow

Nyack’s crumbling marina will be getting a $150,000 grant from the NY Department of State for the design and construction of a new ramp and a dock for canoes, kayaks and rowing shells.

The three-to-one matching grant is one of a dozen awards announced by New York’s Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez to commemorate last year’s Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial celebration. “These docks will bring people to the water and will be key elements in the revitalization efforts of [New York’s] waterfront communities,” says Cortés-Vázquez.
Nyack’s grant will help fund a partial repair the crumbling bulkhead by replacing 75 feet of the seawall in the southwest corner of the marina.  A dilapidated floating dock will also be removed and a second dock will be shortened to permit installation of a new ramp and floating dock.  The low profile dock will permit better access to all human powered vessels like kayaks, canoes and rowing shells.
“I am elated that our high school rowers and the community will have a safe, protected and brand spanking new dock from which to launch rowing shells, canoes and kayaks,” says Peter Klose, Director of the River Rowing Association.  ‘€œOur community will benefit through better access to the water.’€

The River Rowing Association prepared the grant application with the assistance of the Village of Nyack. As part of the grant terms, an additional $50,000 in funds must be raised.  ‘€œWe believe that we are part of the way to the goal of raising private donations for the match, but need the village to pledge additional ‘€˜in kind’ services which count toward the final total,’€ said Klose.  The new dock will improve access for the very long rowing shells utilized by the various community rowing programs sponsored by the River Rowing Association.

“This grant will help us perform badly-needed repairs to our marina and improve our community’s access to our wonderful riverfront,” says Nyack Mayor Richard Kavesh. The marina rehabilitation is part of a larger plan to revitalize Memorial Park and Nyack’s waterfront. “Thanks to the River Rowing Association and its Director, Ivan Rudolph Shabinsky and the Nyack Park Conservancy for their efforts to make this grant possible,” Kavesh says.
