County Will Spend $100k of Contingency Funds on Catch Basin Treatments

Rockland County, Updated June 6 — Legislators will dip into a contingency fund to pay for the county’s effort to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. The 2010-11 county budget had stripped funding for the annual program leaving the responsibility to treat catch basins to town and village governments.
“We have a short window of opportunity to prevent mosquitoes from breeding,” says Harriet Cornell, Chairwoman of the Rockland County Legislature. “I am pleased that we have been able to work together to continue the treatment of the catch basins.”
The County Executive’s decision not to fund this program caught legislators by surprise. Since 1999, county Health Department employees have dropped briquette-shaped pellets of an insect growth regulator into catch basins throughout the county to prevent mosquito-borne diseases. Rockland County’s mosquito control program includes the treatment of swampy areas, availability of mosquito dunks for residents and distribution of public educational information.

I believe you can contact the RC Health Dept to report any potential breeding sites. They should go out an inspect. In the Journal News, there are regular reports on the violations that are issued for this type of item. As to the Department finally giving the go ahead to begin the treatment, they may have already missed the boat, as I believe the larvae have already had their season of hatching…I might be wrong, but I believe I read that somewhere. Hopefully there will be some benefit to the treatment and this is not just a waste of funds at this point, especially when funding is so important during these tough economic times.
Glad to hear that the county will be working to eliminate mosquitoes and the stagnant water in which they breed.
The Riviera bar across the street from me is storing clumps of plastic sheeting on their roof, which contain pools of stagnant water — mosquito breeding pools. I wonder what can be done to remediate that problem.
