Nyack’s Dead Space

Nyack’s Oakhill Cemetery has a lot fewer trees now that it has begun its expansion for more burial space. In the last few days, heavy equipment has taken out most of the large trees on the piece of land along Rte 9W on the north end of the cemetery.

The cemetery received site plan approval (see Village site for minutes) last summer from the Planning Board.

    Just terrible.

We should boycott and not use this cemetary!

It certainly seems that the cemetery felt and were quite certain, when they presented to the board during the 2009 meeting, they had no legal obligation to meet any of the village’s requirements for site plans (as evidenced by their position that they are governed by State authority). The way in which the property has been cleared (it looks like a hatchet job) just seems to show that they did not even attempt to maintain any trees. Maybe during these types of projects within the village, the planning board members (or building department reps) should be monitoring the sites to ensure compliance with agreed upon points?

Who’s paying for all of this? It looks absolutely horrible.
