Nyack, April 27 — Months of demolition, reconstruction and recipe testing will be put to the test when Nyack’s newest business, Gypsy Donut and Espresso Bar, opens for business today.
The business, founded by three families from the Nyack area, has received wide community support and over $16,000 in capital funding from a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year. But not all of the comments have been positive. Some harsh remarks on the Yahoo social media Website NyackSocialScene from readers outside the village criticized the effort as creating an unhealthful product and not being sufficiently dedicated “to bringing people out of poverty and hiring the low income and unemployed.”
An Indiana college professor, Dr. Harold Hill, submitted the following op-ed about the Gypsy Donut And Espresso Bar new business venture.
Citizens of Nyack! Either you’re closing your eyes to a situation you do now wish to acknowledge
Or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a new Donut Shop in your community.
Ya got trouble, my friend, right here, I say, trouble right here in our river village.
Why sure I’m a donut lover, certainly mighty proud I say.
I consider the college hours I spent sipping coffee in dinners
Clutching a cream filled ring of lard were certainly golden
Helped me cultivate a well refined taste for the sweeter things in life.
But any boob can sit at a counter and scarf down a glazed circle of dough.
They call that sloth! The first big step on the road — to the depths of degradation!
First it’s donuts — then Hostess Cupcakes — and then (gasp!)
Hot Pockets and then Beef Jerky!
The next thing you know your sons and daughters are standing in line in some fast food joint
Ordering Dollar Meals! Sipping milk shakes that have no milk!
Wearing hoodies when it isn’t even raining!
Trouble, oh we got trouble, right here in the Nyack Village!
With a capital “D” that rhymes with “G” that stands for Gypsy.
We’ve surely got trouble! Right here in or little village. Right here!
Gotta figger out a way to keep the young ones eating healthy after school!
Now, I know all you folks are the right kinda parents.
I’m gonna be perfectly frank.
Would ya like to know what kinda conversation goes
On while they’re loafin’ around that Donut Shop?
They’re talking about Facebook, Tumblr, Foursquare. Tryin’ out Instagram and Reddit.
And braggin’ all about!
Talking about how they’re gonna cover up the tell-tale donut breath with Orbit gum.
One fine night, they leave the donut shop.
Heading for the woods behind the high school!
Blaring loud music from their car stereos!
Listening to the iTunes! Not listening to Elvis. Or the Beatles!
Your children are listening to this shameless music!
With glucose in their veins and the taste of glazed donuts in their mouths!
Reviving their base jungle animal instincts! Mass Hysteria!
Ya got trouble — right here on the Hudson!
With a capital “D” that rhymes with “G”
Which makes us all look like fools!
We’re in terrible, terrible trouble.
That box with 12 donuts is the devil’s food!
Oh yes we got trouble, trouble, trouble!
With a “T”! Gotta rhyme it with “D”!
Up to 300 calories!
Gypsy Donut, located in the former Gracie’s Ravioli space on North Franklin Street near Main Street in Nyack, opens to the public on Friday April 27 at 7a with a Grand Opening party beginning at 6:30p that same day. Three Nyack familes who have been friends for decades started the business from scratch, making donuts from scratch. “Our one goal is to bring incredibly delicious, well made and high-quality artisan donuts and coffee using high-quality ingredients, including fair-trade coffee products, organic dairy and more,” they say on their About Us at GypsyDonut.com.
