Spring is Only A Sail Away

NSL112_Nyack Boat Club_sailingby Donna Cox

On a Winter’s Day not long ago, I spied the picturesque Hudson River through a thick blanket of clouds covering the icy gray water. On days like this, my mind can’t help but wander to thoughts of warm sunshine and sailing. Visions of billowy sails and the sound of water rushing past the hull warm my soul.  I can hear the halyards ringing against masts, providing the perfect music to Friday night dinners with friends and family on the patio. What better place to enjoy the river than the Nyack Boat Club?

The Nyack Boat Club (NBC) was established in 1909 by a group of boating enthusiasts to support and promote recreational sailing and boating on the majestic Hudson River. Now, more than 100 years later, this vibrant club is still thriving. Our “Do-It-Yourself” philosophy keeps membership costs reasonable and all the members pitch in to maintain the club and keep things running smoothly.

Come See For Yourself!

The Nyack Boat Club is hosting an Open House for the public on Saturday, May 31, from 11a – 4p (rain date – June 7) at 59 Gedney Street in Nyack. Stop by and meet club members, tour the grounds and the clubhouse, go for a sail and learn about the varied programs and year-round activities the Nyack Boat Club has to offer.

For more information visit NyackBoatClub.org or email mail@nyackboatclub.org.

Located on the west shore of the river, NBC is equidistant between the Tappan Zee Bridge to the south and lovely Hook Mountain to the north. Stretching the length of our waterfront are more than one hundred dry sailing spaces and racks for over sixty Windsurfers, Sunfish, Lasers and dinghies. Our expansive Hudson River mooring area has space for more than one hundred and fifty larger boats.

Our lawns, picnic grounds and clubhouse are available to members and their guests to enjoy. A lovely patio and partially covered deck offer spectacular views of the river and a relaxed setting to socialize.

The club has several subgroups, also called Fleets, committees and events so there is something for everyone to enjoy year-round.

Comprised of a wide variety of larger boats, the Cruising Fleet is the biggest fleet in the Club. Many members of the Cruising Fleet combine weekly active racing with social sailing and cruising to distant locations.

One-Design Boat Fleets (Sonar, Laser, Ensign, Lightning and Thistle)

Each of these fleets is comprised of sailors with an affinity to their specific boat type. Many members of these fleets partake in Wednesday and Sunday races at NBC as well as other races in the surrounding areas.

Junior Sailing

The Nyack Boat Club’s offers two four-week Junior Sailing program sessions over the summer from late June through July. Our mission is to support the development of junior sailors ages 8-15 years through recreational sailing, sailboat racing and other marine pursuits as well as advancing their seamanship and navigation skills and fostering a lifelong passion for sailing. Although primarily for family and friends of Nyack Boat Club members, the Junior Sailing program is open to the public.

Adult Sailing

Available to adult club members who want to develop their own comfort level and individual capability out on the water, the adult sailing program offers a sense of structure and skill development – while retaining the fun of sailing.

Social Activities

It’s not just about sailing…The Nyack Boat Club hosts social events throughout the year – pier parties, barbeques, potluck dinners, Wednesday night movies and other improptu get togethers where lifelong friendships are forged.
