Nyack Weekender for Sept 19-21, 2014

Here’s a run down of what to do and where to do it this weekend.

Friday

  • Jazz vocalist Alicia Crowe performs at Avida Wine Bar beginning at 8p. At 159 Main St.
  • Prohibition River hosts acoustic musicians every Friday night in the Upstairs Lounge starting at 9p. No cover. The featured artist this week is Eve Fingal. At 82 Main St.
  • The Nyack Village Theatre celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month by showing assorted films from Spain and Portugal. Sept. 19 and 20 at 7:30p. Advanced tickets can be purchase here. At 94 Main St.

Saturday

  • Come celebrate the new playground in Memorial Park! Stop by and enjoy free ice cream, face painting and, of course, a chance to play. Live jazz music will be performed by Nyack High School students. The festivities begin at 11a.
  • An Ultimate Frisbee Tournament is the perfect opportunity to embrace the brisk fall with exercise and competition, sponsored hosted by the Village of Nyack’s Recreation Department. Sign up at the Village Hall or online at Nyack-NY.gov. 9a-12n at Memorial Park.
  • The Nyack Saturday Farmer’s Market features local farmers, florists, vendors and artists from 8a-1p in the Main Street parking lot. Music at the market this week features John Wilson performing selections of gospel, rhythm, and blues music.
  • Historic Tallman Mountain State Park Hike: A guided hike through Tallman to learn about its fascinating history as a former oil tank farm. The next leg of the trip takes place at Piermont Pier and sheds light on the thousands of US troops that waited there for ships to transport them to their stations in WWII. 10a at Tallman State Park.
  • Haverstraw RiverArts Festival: Enjoy live music in styles ranging from latin jazz to rock to kid-friendly while perusing a selection of local crafts and food vendors. Then, witness a collaborative artistic effort as professional artists and Rockland high school students create sculptures from found objects supplied by the Hudson River. 12p, Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.
  • Compassion Rally Day at Nyack’s Memorial Park hosted by Rockwest Youth Federation from 2-7p, including a march at 3p and a concert at 4:30p. Includes a back-to-school supplies giveaway!

Sunday

  • Art in the Park is a community event featuring more than 50 artists who will display their work and engage the public with workshops and opportunities to create. 1-6p in Flywheel Park on the Hudson in Piermont.
  • One to One Learning hosts a benefit concert at Marydel Faith & Life Center beginning at 4p. Musicians will perform before the backdrop of Hook Mountain and guests will sample fare from local favorites like Bourbon Street, Avispa, and many more.

  • Mon, Sept 22: ARC’s 19th Annual Taste of Rockland: Feast on five-star culinary masterpieces served by 42 different restaurants, all based in Rockland County. 6p at the Hilton Pearl River, 500 Veterans Memorial Drive.
  • Tues Sept 23: It’s Banned Book Week at the Nyack Library where local celebrities and community members read excerpts from a banned or challenged book. From 3:30-8p, guest readers include Dan Cohen, musician; Kevin Pariseau, actor; Jeffrey Friedberg, musician; Sakina Jaffrey, actress; Carolyn MacCullough, author; Daniel Wolff, author; Jen White, mayor; Tom Dudzick, playwright; Elliott Forrest, broadcaster. 59 S.   • Wed Sept 23: Author and Filmmaker Mary Murphy discusses the impact of To Kill a Mockingbird at 7p through a discussion of her book, Scout, Atticus and Boo: A Celebration of Fifty Years of To Kill A Mockingbird and her documentary film, Hey Boo. Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.
