The Rockland County Task Force on Water Resources Management will hold a Water Symposium on Sat  Oct 25 from 9a-12n at SUNY Rockland presenting nationally recognized experts in the fields of water management and conservation. The symposium is open to the public.

The task force was formed in June following a May 2014 decision by the New York State Public Service Commission to put UNWY’s plans to build a desalination plant in Haverstraw on hold until at least 2020. The 19-member task force includes elected officials, designated county departments, town and village government, school, business and scientific communities, water quality activists, and United Water New York.

The symposium, titled “Getting Up to Speed”, will discuss best practices and standards of water conservation. Rockland County Legislator Harriet Cornell, who is serving as chairwoman for the task force, has arranged for the following speakers:

  • Amy Vickers, a nationally recognized water conservation and efficiency expert, engineer and author. Ms. Vickers held positions with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and has consulted on Superfund remediation projects for the US Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is the originator and author of America’s first water efficiency standards for plumbing fixtures, which were adopted by the US Energy Policy Act of 1992, resulting in an estimated savings of 7 billion gallons of water, daily.
  • Al Appleton, an environmental consultant on issues of sustainable water resource management, and a recognized expert in using market measures to address environmental problems, sustainably. Mr. Appleton is a former Commissioner of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, in which capacity he served as the Director of the NYC Water and Sewer System.
  • Dan Duthie, Esq., holds Civil and Environmental Engineering Degrees and has participated in the design of water and wastewater projects. As an attorney, Mr. Duthie has represented many stakeholders before state regulatory commissions and on behalf of the Town of Ramapo intervened in both the “need” and “surcharge” UWNY cases before the NYPSC.

The County Task Force on Water Resources Management invites the public to attend its “Getting Up to Speed” symposium on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 9a-12n at the Rockland Community College Technology Building, 145 College Rd in Suffern.
