Nyack Weekender: Jazz Week Finale

There’s music in the air as Jazz Week concludes, a Johnny Cash tribute plays, a Grateful Dead cover band performs and the classical McCall-Deats Duo duets. Plus new theatre productions at Elmwood Playhouse,  Shades Repertory and Penguin Rep. And if you want to get outside and feel the sea spray in your face, check out Outrigger Canoe Day on the Hudson this Sunday.

Friday

  • Nyack Jazz Week presents the Alexis Cole Quartet from 8-10p at Nyack Library Carnegie-Farian Room, 59 S. Broadway.
  • Orangetown’s Family Night at the Movies features the Bossy Frog Band Concert @ 6:30p, a Magic Show @ 8p, and a showing of Despicable Me @ 8:45p. Residents of all ages are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and relax under the stars. Free popcorn & admission. Veteran’s Memorial Park, Orangeburg.
  • Big Jim Wheeler and Band in Black featuring Billy Rues performs the best Johnny Cash tribute “this side of Memphis.” 8:30p at the Turning Point, 468 Piermont Ave.
  • Shades Repertory Theater presents Medjugorje The Final Prophecya dynamic look at five characters of five different faiths and ethnicities. Fri & Sat at 8p, Shades Repertory Theater, 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
  • Elmwood Community Playhouse presents All In The Timing, a collection of clever and hilarious one-acts by David Ives. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p. Elmwood Community Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • Penguin Rep Theatre stages My Name Is Asher Lev, adapted from the novel by Chaim Potok. Fri at 8p, Sat at 4p & 8p, Sun at 2p. Various showtimes through August 2. Penguin Rep Theatre, 7 Crickettown Rd, Stony Point.

Saturday

  • It’s a beautiful weekend to go for a spin on two wheels. Join your neighbors when BikeNyack rides from Bear Mountain to Cold Spring. Meet at 8:30a by Jones Point Parking Area on 9w or meet at 7:45a to carpool from Memorial Park, Nyack.
  • Nyack Jazz Week hosts its closing night with the Bernie Williams/Gil Parris Quartet with shows at 8p and 10p at The Hudson House, 134 Main St.
  • The Red Hawk Native American Arts Council presents its annual Bear Mountain Powwow, a celebration featuring over 500 Native American artists, educators, singers, dancers and performing groups from across America. Highlights include a live bird of prey exhibit, pony rides and tipi raising. Sat & Sun at Harriman State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.
  • Alternative-American rock band, Boxing the Needle, plays two sets of Grateful Dead music as a tribute to the famous band. 8-11p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.

Sunday

  • Nyack’s River Rowing Association invites paddlers of all skill levels, from novice to experienced, to an Outrigger Canoe Day on the Hudson River. 10a-1p at Nyack Marina, next to The River Club, 11 Burd St.
  • Haverstraw’s Annual Latin Parade and Festival kicks off with a parade from the entrance of Emeline Park and end at Haverstraw Elementary School where the festival take places with vendors, band performances, traditional food and more! 11a-8p at Haverstraw Elementary School lot, 16 Grant St, Haverstraw.
  • The Rockland Conservatory of Music presents The McCall-Deats Duo with Alvin McCall on the cello and Jan Deats on the piano performing Handel, Debussy, and Brahms. Rockland Conservatory of Music

Tuesday

Friends of the Nyacks presents Mostly Music summer concert series each Tuesday thru Aug 11. This week listen to Mr. Gone – Peter Furlan, Neil Alexander – play early 70s jazz fusion. 7:30p at Memorial Park, Piermont & Depew Aves, Nyack.

Wednesday

Stony Point Summer Concert Series presents Hurley Mountain Highway as they entertain with their acoustic-electric 4 piece band. 7p at River Front Park, Grassy Point Rd, Stony Point.

Thursday

Jazz Music In The Garden at Hopper House 201108The Dom Cicchetti Trio plays Music In The Garden at the Hopper House. Bring a lawn chair and a donation of $5 for great jazz in a comfortable setting. 7:30p, 82 North Broadway, Nyack.
