Nyack Weekender: First Friday of February

It’s the First Friday of February and romance is in the air. The Nyack Art Collective hosts a group show titled Feast of Love while the art gallery, Beast with a Million Eyes, presents Art of the Pin-up and the Edward Hopper House exhibits Dreams and Shadows: The Life and Art of Joseph Cornell. On Saturday, Nyack Center kicks off the Annual Black History Month Celebration with And Still We Rise and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest. And on Sunday, the Rockland Symphony presents a fundraising concert with the Madkoi Quartet. Here’s your rundown of what to do and where to do it.

Friday

• It’s the First Friday of February and Nyack’s monthly one-night downtown arts festival includes a group show titled Feast of Love plus live music at 8p at Casa del Sol, 104 Main St. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective at various venues throughout downtown from 6-8p, including a group display at Prohibition River, 82 Main St.

• Art of the Pin-up at Beast with a Million Eyes, featuring vintage illustration & memorabilia from the collection of James Motomal, photography and a Live Pin-Up Shoot by Paige Blinn and special guest, former Cheesecake Model Jonnie Wilson. 6p at Beast with a Million Eyes, 68 S. Broadway.

• The Edward Hopper House Arts Center presents Dreams and Shadows: The Life and Art of Joseph Cornell, a presentation by Cliff Tisdell. Nyack native Joseph Cornell was a pioneering figure in the art of assemblage, renowned for his unique surrealist-inspired shadow boxes. 7p at The Edward Hopper House, 82 N. Broadway, Nyack.

• Enjoy some classic whodunits with Alfred Hitchcock Presents 2 One Acts
  where macabre murder mysteries are performed live on stage, directed by Richard Quinn. Fri & Sat at 8-10p at the Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St, Nyack.

• Elmwood Playhouse presents Harvey, a classic comedy about a kind hearted, middle-aged eccentric whose best friend is an invisible mythological creature resembling a six-foot tall rabbit. Fri & Sat at 8p. Elmwood Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.

• Bear Mountain Ice Rink is open for the winter! Adults $5, children (ages 4-22) $4. Check website for holiday hours. Bear Mountain Ice Rink, Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.

Saturday

• Local artist Bill Batson is the MC for Nyack Center’s Annual Black History Month Celebration, And Still We Rise and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Contest. Honorees – the HoSang Family, Grant Valentine, Mary E. White. Performances by Chiku Awali, Naomi’s Program of Excellence and Jonette O’Kelley Miller. Top finalists of oratory contest to perform at event. 7p at 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.

• Opening Reception for Hudson Valley Landscapes Photography by Steve Aaron. 1-3p at the Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303, Valley Cottage.

• Frankie D & the Boys are back with some funk, soul and R&! 9p at Casa del Sol, 104 Main St, Nyack.

Sunday

• An Exhibition and Reception for the art work of Ed Kirkland. 1-3p at Nyack Library, 59 S. Broadway.

• The Young Masters Recital Series features Jun Luke Fosters, a classical pianist who performs Bach, Chopin, Scriabin and more. 1:30–3:30p at Valley Cottage Library, 110 NY-303, Valley Cottage.

• Classical pianist Yashar Yaslowitz performs at the Sunday Salon Music Series. 3p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Ave, Sparkill.

• The Rockland Symphony presents a fundraising concert with the Madkoi Quartet performing selections from Dvorak’s String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, American, Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D Major and Piazzolla’s Four for Tango. $20 General Admission. 4p at Piermont Reformed Church, 361 Ferdon Ave.

Wednesday

Rivertown Film presents Building Magic, a wandering traveler turned full-time maker magician and his menagerie of monkeybots, suitcase machines and other odd and not so odd inventions. Meet the filmmakers: Mario Marchese and director Kal Toth. The evening includes a rare demonstration of Mario’s inventions. 8p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave, Nyack.

Thursday

The Food For Thought Lecture Series features Dr. Lori Martin’s new book Lessons from the Black Working Class. Dr. Martin shares lessons all Americans can learn from the black working class and provides an insightful assessment of President Obama’s record on race and addressing socioeconomic differences.
