Did You Know: There’s a Vinyl Revival at the Nyack Library?

The media and listeners of music have coined the phrase Vinyl Revival to describe the renewed interest and increase in sales of vinyl records.  In 2007, there was a small increase in sales and in the 2010’s sales have been growing at a fast rate.  It’s not just the baby boomers, yearning for their old music medium, who are responsible for the increase in sales, millennials are buying the vinyl records too.
The Nyack Library has jumped on the bandwagon and now has a small collection of vinyl records available to circulate.  Each title can be checked out for two weeks without renewal and are only available to patrons who come into the library to check them out. Nyack is the only library in the area to circulate vinyl records and the last time they were available for circulation was 15 years ago.  The small but diverse collection available at the Nyack Library includes:  Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Graceland by Paul Simon, Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, 1989 by Taylor Swift, and Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A.  There’s sure to be something for music lovers of all genres.
In addition to circulating vinyl records, the Nyack Library now has a Listening Station with a new record/CD player in the corner of the popular materials area.  There are headphones available to check out for use in the library and patrons age 18 and over can listen to any record or CD in the collection for up to 30 minutes.

Ornamental Grasses, Wed at 7p
This program will introduce the characteristics and landscape uses of various genera of ornamental grasses grown in Rockland.  Specific facts on purchasing, planting, and maintaining these grasses will help homeowners decide which grasses are best for their yards.  Also included in this program is information on those grasses which are considered invasive by the DEC, as well as those grasses which are native and grow well in Rockland.  Presented by Steven Becker, Master Gardener with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Rockland. Registration is required.
Abby Stein: TRANSitions – The Struggles of a Girl, Assigned Male at Birth, Raised in an Ultra-Orthodox Jewish Hasidic Family in NYC, Sun at 2:30p
Abby Stein is a NYC based activist who raises awareness about Transgender related issues within the Ultra-Orthodox and broader Jewish Community.  Abby’s talk will be followed by an audience Q&A.  There is no charge for this event.  Part of the Moral Courage Documentary Series presented by the Holocaust Museum and the Center for Tolerance and Education.  The Moral Courage Documentary Series is funded in part by Orange and Rockland Utilities and is meant to promote personal narrative story-telling as a means to combat hatred and bigotry. Also co-sponsored by VCS and FOOTSTEPS. Please register, but drop-ins are welcome.
