Nyack Weekender: The Music Plays On

 Nyack Jazz Week continues with world-class performances throughout the weekend, plus rock, reggae and Broadway tunes. This Fri-Sun list of what to do and where to do it is brought to you by The Arts Council of Rockland.

Friday

  • much adoEnjoy the Babbling Brook Players rendition of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, a comedy exploring love that triumphs over any gossip and mischief. Fri-Sun at 6:30p at Clark Recreation Center, 59 Campbell Ave, Suffern.
  • The Mighty Spectrum Band performs music ranging from rock to soul from 7:30-9p at Torne Valley Vineyards, 1 Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.
  • Nyack Jazz Week presents a solo concert with jazz piano great Kenny Werner. 8-10p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union St, Sparkill, 8-10p.
  • The audience is enthralled and propelled in The Other Place, a play about a successful drug company biophysicist whose life is unhinged. Fri & Sat at 8p, Sun at 2p, Elmwood Playhouse, 10 Park St, Nyack.
  • Enjoy some classic whodunits with Alfred Hitchcock Presents 2 One Acts where macabre murder mysteries are performed live on stage. Fri & Sat from 8-10p at the Nyack Village Theatre, 94 Main St, Nyack.

Saturday

  • africanBike Nyack‘s weekly 25 mile ride goes over a hill and across a dale to Hillsdale, NJ. Meetup at 830a at Nyack Memorial Park, the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves.
  • Rivertown Film and The African American Historical Society of Rockland County join together to bring the first public screening of Hell-Bound Train, Heaven-Bound Travelers and Verdict: Not Guilty. The silent films feature a score by Nyack resident, Sam Waymon. Doors open at 7:30p, and films begins at 8p at Nyack Center, 58 Depew Ave.
  • Jazz week -- Mr GoneNyack Jazz Week presents Mr. GONE playing psychedelic electric jazz. Shows at 8 & 10p at The Hudson House, 134 Main St, Nyack.
  • Rumble in Rockland invites wrestling fans to enjoy a night of action, headlined by WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair. 7p at Palisades Credit Union Park, 1 Provident Bank Park Dr, Pomona.
  • Ras Spectiz lays down reggae tunes at 5p at Tallman Beach and Pool Club, Rockland Rd, Sparkill.
  • Edward Hopper House features photographer David LaChapelle’s Gas Station Series. LaChapelle is renowned for his celebrity photographs, music videos and films. On display through Sept 11. 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

  • With the fiddle, triangle and the accordion, Catahoula Cajun Band plays dance music that fuses French, American and Country with influences from African rhythms, Creole and ‘northern fried cajun’. 6:30p at Franklin St Park, Nyack.
  • Jazz Week Closing Night showcases Guitarist Vic Juris & Friends with John Richmond on tenors, Cameron Brown on bass, and Tony Jefferson on drums. 7:30p at The Turning Point Café, 468 Piermont Ave.

Music Mondays: Rob McMahon performs story-driven, singer-songwriter material. Plus, enjoy tasty offerings by the chefs of Halo and Horns. 6p at Union Arts Center, 2 Union Dr, Sparkill.

Tuesday

  • Grab a lawn chair and enjoy Mostly Music Festival on the Hudson as Neil Berg, Rita Harvey, and Friends perform Broadway music. 7:30p,  Nyack Memorial Park, Piermont & Depew Aves.
  • Warm up the vocal cords and head to Rockland Summer Sings! No experience necessary, just a desire to sing (or listen) to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana led by a local conductor with accompaniment. 7:30p at St Thomas Lutheran Church, 2 Old Ox Rd, Central Nyack, NY (Off Rte 59 Opp The Hub Shopping Center).

Wednesday

  • bearVintage cars roll into the Bear Mountain Car Cruise along with a DJ, bounce house and food. Every Wed through Sept. 5-9p at Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Parkway or Route 9W N. 
  • 24Seven brings six decades of dance music to the Family Music Festival, presented by the Town of Clarkstown. 7:30p at Germonds Park, 185 Germonds Rd, W Nyack.

Thursday

The Bill Crow Quintet performs at Music in the Garden: Jazz Concert Series7:30p at Edward Hopper House, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.
