Nyack Weekender: Valentine’s Day

This weekend features both laughs and love, food and fine art and music to soothe your snow-shoveling soles. At Date and Create, you can bring a date to enjoy wine, chocolate, and pottery making. If you and your special someone prefer music, catch the Shirley Crabbe GroupAnna Veleva, or Alice Burla. Or just for laughs, see comedy legend Dave Attell.

Friday

  • Date and Create tonight!  Couples, 21 yrs & older, can experience an art activity on their date and bring home a work of art. The event will be two hrs of instructed pottery making.  Enjoy a little wine and chocolate, on the house.  Reservations required.  Workshops will take place 7-9p on the second Friday of the month. Admission:$100 per couple.  Rockland Center For the Arts, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack.
  • PictureTonight is the ‘Snow Moon Hike’.  A trail crew will lead another full moon hike through the trails at the State Line Lookout area on the cliff top in Alpine. Hikers should bring flashlights. The route will cover about two miles in about 1.5 hours over moderate hiking trails. Meet up at the State Line Lookout Palisades Interstate Parkway Exit 3 (accessible for northbound travelers via the u-turn). 7-8:30p.
  • Carnegie Concert series presents the Shirley Crabbe Group.  In her 2011 debut CD HOME, the Ella Fitzgerald inspired jazz singer teamed up with jazz giant Houston Person for a hit album that stayed on the Jazz Week Album Chart for 26 weeks. Nyack Library, 59 South Broadway, 7:30-9:30p.
  • Skate at Bear Mountain Ice Rink. Adults $5, children (ages 4-11) $4. 2-3:30p. General skating: Fri from 8-9:30p, Sat & Sun from 10a-9:30p. Bear Mountain Ice Rink, Bear Mountain State Park, Palisades Interstate Parkway.
  • Need a laugh? Dave Attell, one of the great touring comics, takes his act to Levity Live this weekend.  7:30 & 9:45p on Fri; Sat at 7p & 9:30p. 4th floor of the Palisades Center.

Saturday

  • Learn to let go of stress with Heartfulness Meditation at the Valley Cottage Library.  Supriya Reddy will guide you through the relaxation technique from 10:30-11:30a.  110 Route 303, Valley Cottage.
  • The Eye of the Beholder: Art Through the Lens presents the works of three extraordinary photographers who imbue their subjects with intense and moving visual artistry.  The featured photographers are David Schloss, Doris Wiese, and Laurie Peek. The exhibit opened on February 3 and runs through February 28. 4-7p, Franklin Antiques, 142 Main St, Nyack.
  • cheftony-0004-1The Union Arts Center is adding a pop up restaurant featuring four courses inspired by red, with an open bar (beer and wine) and live jazz. Chefs Anthony Accomando and Angela Rivera of Halo and Horns “In the Mood” pop-up restaurant sold out last year. $99 per person. 7-10p, 2 Union Street Sparkill.

Sunday

  • Families are invited to drop in to the Community Room at the Nyack Library between 1 – 3p on the Second Sunday of each month.  This month’s project is cardboard cityscapes, inspired by Hopper’s buildings and architecture. You will collage cardboard into buildings, adding architectural details with smaller pieces,  then you’ll add color with acrylic paint.
  • Opera singer Anna Veleva will perform selections from famous operas, romantic classical songs, and arias.  Mrs. Veleva has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall- Stern Auditorium, J.F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and much more.  Delicious small bites prepared by Halo & Horns Kitchen and beverages available a la cart. 7 – 9p, 2 Union St, Sparkill. She will also perform this Sun from 1:30-3:30p at the Valley Cottage Library, 110 Route 303, Valley Cottage.
  • The Historical Society of Rockland County presents Let It Snow: Holiday Exhibition, exploring wintertime in Rockland. From the commercial impact of the ice-cutting industry to extreme weather and the adventure of outdoor winter activities, this exhibit includes film footage, photographs and art installations. 12n – 4p, Sun, Wed, Thurs, Fri until Feb 26. HSRC Galleries, 20 Zukor Road, New City.

  • If you have an interest in exploring the art of water coloring, the Valley Cottage Library offers Wading Through Watercolor.  Local artist Jayne Conte breaks down the basic techniques of watercolors in a relaxing environment with plenty of hands-on instruction.   • The ‘From Prussia With Love’  Weekly Wednesday No.13 program at the Union Arts Center hosts pianist Alice Burla. The music of Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Brahms is performed by 20 year old Alice Burla. Called an “extraordinary talent” by the New York Times, Burla is quickly becoming internationally recognized as a serious pianist. 7:30 – 8:30p, 2 Union St, Sparkill.

Thursday

  • For fresh food, go down to the Nyack Farmers Market and peruse the wide selection of produce. The market is open every Thursday from 8a-2p. Nyack Center, 58 Depew, Nyack.
  • Saxophonist Maceo Parker embodies the legacy of soul and funk music like no other musician. Always at the forefront, Maceo has been a common thread in the history of funk — helping to pioneer the sound of the genre in collaborations alongside seminal icons like James Brown, George Clinton, and Prince, all the while honing his own signature brand of showmanship.  Attend his performance at the Tarrytown Music Hall at 8p. 13 Main St, Tarrytown.
  • Underground - A Play by Samuel Harps (February 24, 25)Go to the Shades Repertory Theatre to see The Underground, A play by Samuel Harps, directed by Joe Albert Lima. The story follows two families on the underground railroad traveling through parts of Rockland County in the 1850’s. $15 advance purchase, $18 general admission at door, $15 students at door. 8-10p. 64 New Main St, Haverstraw.
