It’s a weekend of firsts. Sunday is the first Nyack Street Fair of 2017. The weekend kicks off with First Friday arts and music on Main Street and Broadway.  There’s live music at Casa del Sol, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar and The Turning Point. Rivertown Film screens a movie, Irvington Town Hall holds a staged reading and Nyack Yoga hosts a fundraiser for those who love doing a downward facing dog among cats who need new homes.

Friday

• On the First Friday of each month, local businesses host art and music events.
  • There’s an open themed group art show and silent art auction with musical entertainment by Sam and Zoe Bandes at Casa Del Sol. Presented by the Nyack Art Collective. 8p, 104 Main St, Nyack.
  • Reception for Doris Shepherd Wiese, the First Friday Artist of the Month from 6-7p and curator Joanne Howard and exhibiting artists John Rosis, Polly King, and Suzanna Frosch will talk about the Rock, Paper, Scissors exhibition from 7p -8p at Edward Hopper House Art Center, 82 N Broadway, Nyack.

• Learn a fresh take on wildlife painting with local lad-now Brooklyn based artist, Brendan Donleavy. The Rockland Audubon Society presents Thought and Memory: A Fresh Take on Wildlife Painting. Donleavy uses techniques drawn from Dutch masters while utilizing modern materials. With the common raven of Northern European mythology as his subject he creates large scale paintings that blend minimalism and realism. 7:30p, Community Center Congers Lake Memorial Park, 6 Gilchrest Rd, Congers.

Saturday

• Find a new favorite feline at Cat Yoga with Laura Kallen in support of Hi-Tor Animal Shelter. Some lovely cats who are up for adoption will share the studio space roaming freely joining your practice. The goal is to help these felines find their forever homes as they are given the opportunity to bond with potential pet parents through yoga. The Stage Door reading series at the Irvington Town Hall Theater continues with a reading of The Burning of New York by Samuel Harps. The Burning of New York tells the true story of an alleged conspiracy by free blacks and sympathetic whites, which resulted in a series of fires in 1741 that plagued lower Manhattan. 7p, 85 Main St, Irvington.
