Nyack Weekender: Art and Music for All

It’s a feast for eyes and ears, for art and music lovers this weekend.  Local indie artist Alyssa Sequoia brings her unique mixture of comedic stories and original music to the Nyack Village Theatre on Friday. The Carnegie Concert Series opens and the South Nyack Summer Concert Series concludes and young up and coming jazz musicians get their day (er, night). Three events celebrate the works of world renowned sculptor and a designer, Jacques Jarrige. There’s a festival of art and music and a block party with art, music and dance.

Friday

• The 2017-2018 season of the Carnegie Concert Series opens with “A Cello Conversation” with E. Zoe Hassman. This innovative solo cellist will perform a special, interactive audience-friendly cello recital with music from different genres including classical, pop, jazz and beyond. 7:30p, Nyack Library, 59 S Broadway, Nyack.

Saturday

• It’s time for another roadtrip for Bike Nyack. Note the different start time and location as we travel to Bear Mountain for the Two Bridges Ride, which includes Hudson River crossings on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge and the Bear Mountain Bridge. Meetup in Bear Mountain State Park parking lot near the carousel at 8a. Arrive before 8a to avoid the parking fee.

• Be one of the first 150 guests and get a free mini donut at the Grand Re-opening of Boxer Donut (formerly Gypsy Donut). Come try the donuts, espresso or the house made fruit punch called Knockout Punch. There will be secret giveaways and fun surprises. 7a-7p, 18 N Franklin St, Nyack.

• Find your next treasure at the Giant Community Flea Market. Browse furniture, home decor, kids stuff, jewelry, teen and adult clothing, bikes and much more. Sat and Sun 9a-3p, Palisades Community Center, 675 Oak Tree Road, Palisades, NY.

• Opening reception for Sculptural Exhibitions of Jacques Jarrige: Curves #1, #2, #3 in the Catherine Konner Sculpture Park at Rockland Center for the Arts. The main piece evokes the surface of a frozen wave captured in hand wrought aluminum placed in a naturally formed apse of three trees – a sculptural expression of energy flow, light and nature. Two additional hand hammered aluminum sculptures incorporate the kinetics of wind and sound vibration. The exhibit runs through June 30, 2018. 2-5p, 27 S Greenbush Rd, West Nyack. There will be a creative session and demonstration with Jacques Jarrige from 4-5p.

• The Nyack Parks Conservancy invites you to Cocktails on the Hudson to celebrate community with cocktails, music and scenic Hudson River views. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 2018 Music on the Hudson Concert series and enhancements to Memorial Park. 6-8p, 637 N Broadway, Nyack.

• Spend an evening immersed in a world of virtual reality performance, site specific dance, art installations, body painting, food and drink spread throughout three connecting industrial spaces and culminating in a sundown dj set in a 19th century alleyway at the Brick Alley Block Party at the Garner Arts Center. 6:30p, 55 W Railroad Ave, Garnerville.

• For an evening of lively music, head to Maureen’s Jazz Cellar where the Hudson River Jazz Ensemble, a group of local, young jazz musicians perform. 8 & 9:30p, 2 N Broadway, Nyack.

Sunday

• Tour of Valerie Goodman House to view Jacques Jarrige‘s architectural work and furniture. The tours are 30 minutes long and advance registration is required. A benefit for Rockland Center for the Arts’ exhibitions. 11a-2p, Piermont.

• Art and music lovers won’t want to miss the Haverstraw RiverArts and Music Festival, a full day of music and art set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Hudson River. Hear amazing live bands ranging from rockabilly to latin jazz, purchase handmade local crafts and delicious food and view the works of sculptors creating spontaneous works from the river’s found objects. 11a-5p, Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.

• As part of the RiverArts Festival, set sail on the Schooner Pioneer. Two hour sailings are scheduled for 12p and 2:15p. Emeline Park, 16 Front St, Haverstraw.

• Opening reception for Scale of Curves, an exhibition of Jacques Jarrige‘s jewelry, miniatures and drawings at Piermont Straus Gallery. 2-5p, 10 Roundhouse Rd, Piermont.

• Feel like you’re in a rerun of I Love Lucy at Torne Valley Vineyards‘ fifth annual Grape Crush and Artisan Fair. Bring friends, bring family and get ready to roll up those pant legs. Gallons and gallons of gorgeous grapes will be waiting. There will also great food, fabulous wine, craft beer, spirits, live entertainment and some of Hudson Valley’s talented artists with fine handcrafted gifts and wares. 11a-6p, 1 Torne Valley Rd, Hillburn.

• Come meet the animals and see the beautiful property at the Schuyler Farm Open House Party to celebrate their collaboration with Creative Circles. Bring a blanket and enjoy live music, creative activities, pet the animals and just feel at home and hang out. 1-4p, 45 Schuyler Rd, Nyack.

• Take a Walking Tour of Downtown Nyack with the Historical Society of the Nyacks. Trace Nyack’s growth from a small river village to a major commercial and manufacturing center during the Gilded Age when Nyack was called the “Gem of the Hudson.” 2p, Bottom of Main St near intersection of Main St and Gedney St, Nyack.

• The 2017 South Nyack Summer Concert Series concludes with Eve on Vox covering her rendition of the classic soul/neo-soul artists such as Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Mary J Blige, Adele and Jill Scott. 6:30p, Gazebo at Franklin Street Park, 95 S Franklin St, South Nyack.

Wednesday

• Rivertown Film screens 3 Generations featuring Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon. Ramona is a teenage girl in the wrong body. On her way to becoming “Ray” she is bullied, and, though her mother is supportive, she’s also full of doubts. Ray’s gay grandmother wonders why she just isn’t a lesbian. When the consent form for Ramona’s transition requires signatures from both parents, she and her mother set off in search of her long-estranged father. Thursday

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Carson McCullers’ death on September 29, the Nyack Library presents Carson and Reeves Love Letters. Suzie Parker Devoe, a writer and performer who is originally from Georgia and now lives in Nyack, will present a reading from the letters between Carson and her husband Reeves during the war. 7:30p, 59 S Broadway, Nyack.
