Earth Day Celebration and Music Festival in Nyack

by Ashley TedinoIMG_2678

There are plenty of earth friendly activities for all ages to celebrate Earth Day in Nyack on Saturday April 18 from 12n-5p at the Main St. Gazebo.

Throughout this fun filled day, visitors will be able visit vendors and artisans who will be offering environmentally friendly products and services. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Organic Gardening Workshop will hold a workshop at 12n-1p where visitors are encouraged to participate, learn great gardening tips, and take home a free seed pack. Kids will create art  projects, participate in an Earth Day Facts Scavenger Hunt, get their faces painted, receive henna tattoos, and enjoy the tasty delicious natural foods with their families.  Live local entertainment will be provided from solos and bands starting at 12p which includes Ed Packer, Casting Ships, Alice Leon, The Jeff Rubin Band, and Glenn Schloss.

Before the celebration starts, Keep Rockland Beautiful will host a community clean-up project. Volunteers should meet at the Main Street Gazebo at 9:30a to join a clean-up crew.

This is the third annual Earth Day Celebration and Music Festival hosted by the Nyack Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Nyack. Participating Nyack merchants will offer “Dash Back To Nyack” discounts from April 18-22 — look for an Earth Day Celebration sign in their storefront windows.

Riverkeeper Earth Day Talk on Rockland County “Bomb” Trains

Most Rockland residents would be surprised to learn that oil trains are passing through Rockland every day and within very close proximity to Rockland’s drinking water.

Riverkeeper President Paul Gallay will speak at Dominican College on Apr 21 at 7p on the dangers of crude oil transport through Rockland County via “bomb” trains, barges and the proposed Pilgrim Pipeline. Up to 30 “oil trains” pass through the county each week near Lake DeForest, which supplies roughly one third of Rockland County’s drinking water.

The program will take place at the St. Dominic Convent on the campus of Dominican College, Lavelle Hall’s Huston Room, 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY 10913.

This program is co-sponsored by the Social Justice Committee of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt and Rockland Sierra Club.
