On a recent day in Nyack, in this later 1800s village not long ago of antique charm and just now of mini-cosmopolitan ambiance with restaurants and some small shops but back in memory of a working-class, traditional American commercial/industrial community, I found solace in a $1 container of coffee to go, any size. And call it just that, coffee, not grande or pocachino or whatever moniker is offered at $2.50.

Billions are being sought for Hurricane Sandy reconstruction by the governors of New York and New Jersey and New York City’s mayor. The full dollars may not come given the federal budget deficit, the ‘€œfiscal cliff’€ stalemate and traditional congressional reluctance to assist the Northeast, but whatever funds do arrive, the worry is that the greedy already see cash in their big eyes.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says New York State needs $42 million, Gotham’s mayor wants $15 billion and Jersey Gov. Chris Christie thinks $37 billion will do.

Neither of the presidential candidates showed us the bacon on Tuesday night 10/4/12 in the first of three national debates. Mitt Romney was more aggressive than to be expected, but he was in outer space on some of his ‘€œfacts.’€ Barrack Obama looked like he’d rather be at dinner with his wife on their anniversary. Let’s pray the future ‘€œdebates’€ — these were not such — show us the money. Re-runs of ‘€œWest Wing’€ would have been more exciting.

If ‘€œgovernment is of the people, by the people, for the people,’€ or at least if there is the slightest pretense of that, then the ‘€œpeople’€ get to communicate with officialdom, right? But what happens if Big Brother does not answer?

I thought I could get his ear and help in the dialogue. But, not even a form letter reply to both email and old-fashioned U.S. Postal Service delivery.

SOUTH NYACK, N.Y. — Ever since President Eisenhower, with German Autobahn images fresh in his mind encouraged by car manufacturers and trucking companies, decided to fashion the interstate highway system, localities — the sort that built small-town America — have not counted as much. This is said to be for the greater good, but in the rush to progress, heritage has been lost and so has respect for humble beginnings.

We always knew it was turkey time back in sixth grade when we took a look at a very old painting of Pilgrims and Native Americans at a Thanksgiving feast, which hung all year long in the cloakroom. Why it was there I cannot relate, but kids seemed to notice it just before we went off for the holiday.
Today, gatherings for those fortunate enough to have family and means arouses the same feelings as it did with the early settlers, I presume. Any day you are off the treadmill, when there is a variety of wonderfully smelling food, when kids are running about in innocence and mayhem, when there are many under one roof, you appreciate — are thankful for — what you have.

Filled-in floodplains, overbuilding by profit-seeking developers, weak construction codes, too much strip-shopping and its impermeable asphalt parking lots as well as maintenance neglect of storm drains, tunnels, transit and other infrastructure have overtaxed government’s ability to manage the quality of life on a sunny day, let alone a rainy one and almost never on a stormy day except by borrowing from Peter to pay Paul.
