“As a senior at Bowdoin College, my studio art oil painting professor, Thomas Cornell, asked me my future plans. I explained that I was taking a job in corporate finance. Professor Cornell crossed his arms and sternly lectured that I was meant to be an artist.

I promised him that day that I would return to art when it was possible. After 15 years as a Chartered Financial Analyst on Wall Street in the Junk Bond department of J.P. Morgan, I kept my promise.”

Nyack Sketch Log: NAACP President Frances Pratt

Elegant hats have become the symbol of local civil rights icon Frances Pratt. But when she arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City 60 years ago, she wore a borrowed dress and shoes too tight for walking. On Thursday, April 25, Pratt will officiate over her 44th annual fundraising dinner for the local chapter of the NAACP at the Pearl River Hilton. From head to toe, France Pratt’s story is as bold and compelling as her sense of fashion.

Nyack Sketch Log: Earth Day Action Near & Far

Like millions of Americans, West Nyack’s Robin Bell dreads her commute. It’s not the time it takes to cover the 26,000 mile round trip. And while she certainly misses her family during the weeks she spends at her remote workspace; that is not the worst part. It’s the carbon footprint from the passenger and ski-equipped cargo planes that troubles her the most. Robin Bell is a climate scientist and air travel is the only practical way for her to get to her “office” at Field Camp Twin Otter in Antarctica.

“This year, I set a goal for myself to create one sketch every day for a year. This may not seem like a big challenge to most, but with two active, growing boys, it’s difficult to fit this into an average day. So far, I haven’t missed a beat. When I’m not drawing, I’m painting. I paint on handmade wooden panels, canvas paper, and even shoes.”

This Spring, Kickstart Freedom Summer

Bill Tucker and Sam Waymon have a dream. As the author and composer of the play “Freedom Summer,” they want to educate a new generation about the stunning achievements and extraordinary sacrifices of student organizers during the southern Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. The public has until next Friday, April 19 to support a national tour of their civil rights production by contributing on Kickstarter.

The year 2014 will be the 50th anniversary of the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project, the summer that changed the face of America.

Nyack Sketch Log: Towering Treasures

In London, the jewels are in the tower. In Nyack, the towers are the jewels. The evidence of our architectural opulence is on display in “Towers of Nyack,” a photo exhibit by Bob Goldberg that runs through June 1 on Saturdays from 1-4p, at the Museum of the Historical Society of the Nyacks located at 50 Piermont Avenue. If you haven’t experienced Bob’s love for local architecture and history during one of his walking tours or lectures during the last three decade, this show gives a hint of what you’ve been missing.

Melanie Rodriguez was educated in the public schools of the East Ramapo District. She earned her Bachelors of Liberal Arts at Columbia University, with a concentration in Fine Arts. She was the first recipient of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Museum Educational Trust to study at the Art Centers International in Florence, Italy earning her Post Baccalaureate in Fine Arts.

Sopranos “Big” Selling Out Nyack Village Theatre

Vincent Pastore, who stole scenes during the first two seasons of the Sopranos as Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero is premiering his play Wild Children at Nyack’s Village Theatre on April 12. Pastore flexes his playwrighting muscle in the drama set in a Westchester bar and filled with wise guys, blues singers, drug dealers and strippers.
