It may be a cliché, but it is a fact that our young are our greatest resource. Protecting them, improving their lot in life, and preparing them for the future is each of our responsibilities. This is why the situation our children are facing in the East Ramapo School District is so upsetting, and so merits the attention of the entire County and those who govern it.

A request by Rockland County’s Hi-Tor Animal Shelter to build a new facility on adjacent parkland to replace it’s overcrowded and deteriorating building was turned down by Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef earlier this week. Legislator Ed Day (R-New City/Pomona), a candidate for Rockland County Executive, says the county has an obligation to be more proactive.
The Hi-Tor Animal Shelter has been an indispensable part of this county since its inception, and more so now in this period of shrinking government budgets as a key partner with Rockland in both animal control and care of strays and lost pets.

It is during this time of year, we reflect on things and events past, and look to focus on how we can improve our lot during the calendar’s ‘€œnew beginning.” These New Year’s resolutions are often considered light conversational fare, but can take on great significance as part of a larger solution in our lives. GPS technology aside for the moment, good roadmaps can get us on a path to where we need to get to, both figuratively and literally. For those who believe we here in Rockland are at the edge of our own ‘fiscal cliff’ right now, we need a plan of action designed to get us back to being the great county we know we are.

Rockland County Legislator Ed Day (R-New City/Pomona) announced his candidacy for Rockland County Executive at a campaign event at the Nyack Seaport on Tues Dec 4.
During my 30 years in Rockland, this community provided my family a wonderful place to grow. We have met so many great people who have become lifetime friends. I love this county. This is a county I chose to adopt and raise a family in. It is a county I am proud of. It is home.
There always has been that ‘€œgreat promise’€ handed from one generation to the next – being able to look our children square in the eye and make that same promise our parents made to us – that your living conditions will be better than ours as ours was better than your grandparents.
That ‘€œgreat promise’€ has now been pushed aside here in Rockland.

Recently, the Rockland Business (RBA) Association, in partnership with Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, released a white-paper study entitled “The Rockland County Budget Crisis – How it happened and plotting a course to fiscal health.” With much conversation surrounding this report, this County legislator will offer two simple words. Thank you.
A few of us in the County legislature have been consistently speaking to the folly that often has become policy when proposed by the administration, only to be adopted by the legislative leadership and majority. This ‘€œwhite paper’€ is both a “must read” and an ally in our endeavor, and a rallying cry for the community of Rockland that will hopefully result in true change in county government.
